Hi,
My friend is trying to install NIS2011 on her Windows 7 netbook and is getting a message stating that the security key is invalid.
The key is from a CD bought in PC World which is for a 3PC use. It has already been successfully installed on her PC (Non W7), and she is going through exactly the same process to try and install it on her Netbook.
She is using the Renew process and then entering the key.
She has confirmed that the correct key is being entered
Any help would be appreciated.
I have also asked her to completely remove any old editions + other security s/w and try again
We have now gone through it again, and have solved it.
On looking at the instructions, you have to do something different for netbooks.
Following those nearly worked.
The instructions say that the download/activation process for Netbooks will include entering the key.
This was NOT the case. Following the instructions actually installed the Trial version.
You then had to go into that trial version and then upgrade to the 1 year version
Anyway, she now has NIS2011 on her netbook

That's interesting -- could you please confirm that the Standard edition of NIS that you bought in a store would not install on the netbook or was it that you downloaded the Netbook edition online and installed it and found that the Standard KEY from the bought version did not activate.
If the latter then that is normal because at present the Standard and the Netbook versions use different KEYs and they are not interchangeable -- although there's a thread running in the Norton Ideas Forum here recommending that so please post in it and give a Kudos to the original poster since Norton Staff do monitor and pay attention to that Forum -- it's why they set it up.
What many users are finding is that the Standard Norton's install and run fine on modern netbooks because the original idea, apart from providing on a thumbdrive to get around the lack of optical drive, was to deal with the very small screens on the original netbooks by extending the resolutions available but that is not needed with the modern netbooks. And there are battery saving features like not doing idle tasks when running on battery that are default on the netbook version but which can be set on the Standard edition.
So I hope you did not have to buy a new licence -- but perhaps you'd clarify this for me .... ?
