When I opened my Norton last evening, 7/5/2025, to check my security status, I got a note to “Restart your computer as soon as possible”..I checked Windows Update and there was only an optional update available which has been on for a week or so, as I stopped updating the optional updates. I hit the shutdown button and my computer started updating and stated not to turn off the computer. I turned off the power as I didn’t know what was going on. I have had this note a few times recently and have shut down successfully. This morning I turned on the computer and it stated that my "System’ was being updated. Usually it states “Computer”. After rebooting this morning I checked the Windows Update and my last update was 6/30/2025, but there was a new Norton icon on my desktop. Is this legitimate, or is something else going on?

Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine
========================================
AI Overview
If Norton 360 is prompting you to restart your computer, it’s usually because a recent update or installation requires a system restart to complete. This is normal and necessary for Norton to function properly. If the prompt persists after restarting, ensure all programs are closed before restarting and consider running LiveUpdate again. If the issue continues, there might be a conflict with other software, or a deeper problem that requires uninstalling and reinstalling Norton.
1. The Restart Prompt:
Norton 360, like many security programs, may require a restart after installing updates or making changes to ensure the changes are applied and the program functions correctly.
2. Initial Steps:
- Close all programs: Before restarting, exit all other applications to prevent any potential conflicts during the restart process.
- Restart your computer: Simply shut down and restart your computer as prompted.
3. If the Problem Persists:
- Run LiveUpdate: If the prompt remains after the restart, try running LiveUpdate manually within your Norton 360 program to ensure you have the latest definitions and fixes.
- Check for conflicts: If the issue continues, there may be a conflict with other software on your system. Consider temporarily disabling or uninstalling other security software to see if that resolves the problem.
- Uninstall and reinstall: If all else fails, try uninstalling Norton 360 using the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool and then reinstalling it.
4. Additional Tips:
- Schedule regular restarts: Even without a specific prompt, restarting your computer regularly can help refresh memory and prevent potential issues.
- Check for Windows updates: Make sure your operating system is up to date with the latest patches, as this can also affect Norton’s performance.
5. When to Seek Support:
- Contact Norton Support: If you’re still experiencing issues after trying the above steps, consider contacting Norton support for further assistance.
- Be wary of remote access: Be cautious of unsolicited remote access requests from anyone claiming to be from Norton. If you need remote assistance, initiate it through your Norton account or by contacting their official support channels directly.

Restart your computer as soon as possible
I have never seen the screens shown on your reply. The only note I have ever seen is “Restart your computer as soon as possible”. I wouldn’t normally shut down when asked not to, but it was late at night and that I would deal with it in the morning. Everything seems normal now and it did restart this morning. I was confused as to why no updates for 7/5/2015 were shown in the Windows Update history. It must have been a software, or other issue. I did run a Smart scan this morning and found no issues. Thank you for your reply and I won’t be concerned when I see the message again.
note was from Norton or Windows?
Sorry, I do not recall “Restart your computer as soon as possible”.
I tried to find stock related picture.
The note was on the Norton home screen. I think it was where it normally states " You are protected". If I see it again I will get a screen copy and attach it to this post, or try to send a personal message to you.
Thanks again for your help.

Oh! okay. The note was on the Norton home screen.
Then, I’m thinking the note on “Home” is/was related to 25.6 update.
Norton Security 25.6.10221 for Windows is now available!
Thanks
Yeah…may be the note on “Home” before:
Yeah, I’ll watch for the note on “Home” with next update.
I probably saw the note on “Home” with 25.6 update and clicked through it.
Thanks
