Is it a bad idea to uninstall NIS2011 from startup menu?

I know some people that say yes.  Just want an experts opinion.

Well i would not call it bad, but it could be bad.

If you are not a expert on computers and do not know when and if you may get a virus or malware of some sort. You SHOULD keep Norton on at all times.

Why? Because some virus/malware may get into your system and break threw the defenses if Norton is off. Especially on startup! If Norton is not on, on startup the malware will be able to start and could damage your computer majorly.

If you are no andvanced computer user, i suggest to leave Norton on at startup!

It is very risky to turn it off.

Everything went OK except my SafeWeb icons arenot showing in Google or Bing.

I thought it might be a conflict with SuperAntiSpyware program but I just uninstalled that and checked if SafeWeb was OK and it wasn't.  Any help with this would be appreciated.

junkfresh Hi,  :smileyhappy:

I assumed that your question was about uninstalling by going to "Control Panel" and then "Uninstall a program" to permanently remove NIS 2011, in order to then install NIS 2012.  Am I correct?

junkfresh Hi,  :smileyhappy:

It is definitely not good to have two Security programs running at the same time, with just a few exceptions.

Cheers,

drshlomo.

Yes you are correct in your assumption.  I have installed NIS 2012 and is up to speed.  Except for SAFE WEB. No icons show when searching in Google OR Bing.

Now as I wrote in my previous post,  I ruled conflict of program out.

You say its not OK to run SuperAntiSpyware  with Norton NIS?  I got the suggestion from this Norton forum and from a reputable Norton member so now I'm a bit confused.

In my opinion, it IS a good idea to make sure the previous version of Norton is gone before reinstalling or upgrading. To make sure no malware exists on my system, I run a full scan with the Norton software and malwarebytes before uninstalling. Then to make sure no malware can get on my system when Norton is uninstalled, I physically cut my self from the internet and my network by turning off the wireless router or turning off the wireless radio on the pc (disconnecting the eithernet wire would work if using wired network). Also I tend to use the uninstall option in the start menu since I can start the process as administrator unlike add or remove where I have to wait for the uninstaller to request admin previlges for itself.

@junkfresh try this suggestions: when uninstalling Norton, make sure ALL the Norton files are deleted. Pay close attention to c:/program files/common files (look for Norton, Norton installer, or Symantec) and c:/programdata (look for Norton and Norton installer). Delete those files after running the usual uninstallation procedure using the add/remove or start menu AND Norton removal tool. Notice: this procedure would prompt Norton to ask for your key again after installation as the file for the key used by Norton to remember across installations is located in the c:/programdata Norton or Norton installer files (don’t know which). Make sure you have the key to type in after reinstallation. Or else use the trial installer which comes with a 30 day trial subscription.

I think you have now installed NIS 2012 and is working fine now .To answer you,we always recommend to run the norton removal tool and upgrade to the new version if there is any errors/issues with the older product in your computer which is 2011 in your case.

If the 2011 was working fine, then a removal from add/remove would do the job for you.

It seems that you are having issues with Norton toolbar not getting displayed in your browser. Can you tell me which browser you use ? Is it IE or Firefox ? It would be good if i get the versions of the browser you have ..

Based on this , we can provide you the solution.

Thanks.

Hello

The problem with the icons not showing up in Google or Bing may be the fault of Google because they are always changing things and it sometimes takes a little time for Norton to catch up with them and the same thing with Bing.

Hello James_B7

What we recommend here in the Forum when users are changing versions or products is this.

1.get product key from www.mynortonaccount.com .

2. download the program you want from the link we give in here and save it to desktop

3. download the Norton Removal Tool and save to desktop and save the Identity safe file if used

4 disconnect from the net and uninstall the Norton product using the control panel method and reboot

5. run the Norton Removal Tool twice with a reboot after each run of it and stay off the net

6 run the install of the Norton Product and get back on the net when it wants to activate

7.run live update until all updates are received.

This whole process is only needed however if there is a problem with the previous program, if there are several years apart from 1 version to the next, changing Norton products or types of products like N360 standard to Premier., also when some systems have a problem with over the top installs. So we do recommend safe ways of doing this. Also we tell people they can turn on windows firewall in between if necessary. The 2011 programs were made to be installed over the top in most instances. The same thing with the 2012 products.
