Is it possible for Norton Family to slow web browsing of unmonitored accounts?

Ever since we installed Norton Family to try it out, the parent accounts (unmonitored) seem to periodically be really really slow loading new pages.   We've tried also disabling the norton family browser plugin that got auto installed.

One would assume that unmonitored account would skip the norton family software stack, but who knows.  Do unmonitored account share a code path with monitored accounts?

Firefox 28

NF 2.9.5.29/5.0.0.51

Windows 7 64bit

also running Norton 360, 21.1.0.18

Chrome also seems slow, we have not other antivirus running.

Can you confirm that unmonitored accounts still go through the norton family software stack?  I see NF.EXE running on the unmonitored accounts.

I am having the same issues will Firefox, Chrome and IE on all accounts (monitored and unmonitored) and all PC's and tablets that I am running Norton family on.  I have had to remove the program in order to complete some of my projects... Very frustrating.

Hi rrauenza,

If you disable or uninstall Norton Family (not just the Norton Family add-on), does web browsing speed up?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi LoS-Crash,

Please let us know what antivirus program(s)  and versions you have on the PCs.

Thanks,

Katie

I can't disable it because it is an unmonitored account, hence my question, does the Norton Family software stack still affect internet browsing for unmonitored accounts.  Clearly something is going on since NF.exe is running in my (unmonitored) Windows logins.

Hi rrauenza,

I'd be glad to setup a remote session with you.  If you are interested in having one with me, please send me Private Message via the Forum for details.

Thanks,

Katie

We perhaps can, but I'd like to better understand the software stack and how it integrates into login sessions first.

Can Norton Family affect Windows logins that aren't activated/enabled, while other logins are activated?  This is a question your devs should be able to answer.  Is there any kind of Norton logging that could show whether browser activity in unactivated accounts still goes through the NF.exe stack?

I haven't had time yet to trace network packets to look for evidence of this yet, and I'd rather not because it's a pain..

Hi rrauenza,

Norton Family doesn't (shouldn't) slow web browsing on the monitored accounts & the unmonitored accounts.   The team has addressed an issue with slow internet on Firefox and IE, but internet browsering is normal on Chrome (the issue is not happening on Chrome).

Thanks,

Katie

Well, something is going on between NF and Firefox.   The NF plugin keeps getting re-enabled without my permission and I periodically end up with unkillable firefox processes.

This also seems to correspond with unusually slow response times from websites.

Hi rrauenza,

The feature of Norton Family plug-in enabled by itself works as design.  This prevents some children from disabling & trying to tamper the system.

I'd be glad to setup are remote session with you if you are alble to reproduce the issue during the session.

Thanks

Katie

All,

these issues described here by several users have already been brought up by others:

Other thread

It is obvious that parent's accounts are still being monitored. All traffic is checked against the policy server.

If the policy server is not responding promtly ... there is a delay even for parents. This behavior is not a feature,

this is a BUG. If such accounts are by default not to be monitored, there is no need and no justification to

monitor this traffic. Without policy rules all traffic will be allowed, thus, no need to ask the policy server.

These days I have even trouble with sending emails. Trying twice to get it out, waiting, error message.

Killing NF.exe for both USER and SYSTEM, then sending email again: success.

Not sure why these NF bugs are not being removed ASAP. Katie: Why can't you folks simply get this done?

Regards,

Daniel

Hi,

I'd be glad to setup a remote session if you are interested in having one with me, so we can check into the issue further.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi,

What is the diagnostic process once you are logged into our system remotely?  Do you have diagnostic modes you can put the software into?

Our browsing being slow is very difficult to pinpoint when it is happening ... sometimes it could be just the normal internet slowdown.  So without diagnostic logs from the NF software itself, it seems like it would be difficult to poinpoint.

Does anyone at Symantec actually run this day to day on their computers?   Do they test with multiple accounts logged into Windows7  simultaneously, and with the latest version of FireFox?

Rich

Hi rrauenza,

Can you please let us know how often the issue occurs approximately?

Thanks

Katie

At least daily we have an unkillable firefox process.  Didn't happen before installing NF.

Hi All,

Please let us know if you are still experiencing the issue with the latest Norton Family update 2.9.5.36.

Thanks,

Katie

The slow browsing issue was fixed in .36

HOWEVER IT HAS COME BACK IN .39 WITH A VENGEANCE !!!!!

I AM GETTING CALLS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SPEED ON MULTIPLE PC'S. ALL OF THEM HAVE THE .39 UPDATE..

PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE !!!

THANK YOU !!!!

Hi dbdan22,

Thanks for the post.   We will check into this.
