Is Microsoft Office Automatic Scan redundant?

Is there any disadvantage to turning Microsoft Office Automatic Scan off?

Don't you have full protection even with this option disabled, making it redundant? If not, what is gained by turning it on?

This is in reference to NIS 2009.

The Microsoft Office plug-in allows Norton AntiVirus to scan Microsoft Office files as they are opened. This is done whenever you open the file, even though it has been scanned earlier by Microsoft Office plug-in. If you disable the Microsoft Office plug-in, then your computer will still be protected. The Auto-Protect will still provide protection by scanning any file that is launched, downloaded, opened, created, or deleted. Microsoft Office plug-in is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.

It’s pretty redundant now. Older versions of MS Office (2003?) would nag when you opened a file if you didn’t have an Office antivirus scanner plug-in enabled.
