Is Norton Real Time Protection Inadequate?

I'm afraid that I'm losing confidence in Norton as the days pass by.

I am not a visitor to "dodgy" sites, nor do I use torrents etc, but recently the Norton Scan has been finding some security risks upon it's full scan. I have no idea where these are coming from, but my frustration is born from the fact that Norton seems incapable of protecting me in real time. It suggests everything is safe and secure, but this is clearly quite the opposite. Why are these risks not being detected on the fly - so I know exactly where to avoid? What is the point in me having on the go protection, when Norton only does something when I manually trigger a full scan? Basically, if I don't bother running a full scan, I can't trust that my computer is actually safe for me to bank/shop on.

Has anyone else got any thoughts on this? Or suggestions? I've never messed with the Norton settings, they are pretty much as they were, so I don't really understand why Norton is allowing these risks to run in the background.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
