Hello and thank you in advance. I hope I am in the right place. I am new here and could use some help please.
The other day I had to reinstall and uninstall Norton; my computer was fluky. Worked fine until tonight. I no longer have the Norton toolbar or the little icon on the Windows toolbar. ( My computer would not start right away. I tried to reinstall and uninstall again; but I got a message that "Norton could not gather details about the installed layout or license." I have been waiting to chat with Norton for over an hour. I still have Norton safe search. But I am unable to run a scan. Do I still have Norton and is it protecting my computer? I have Vista and use Firefox, although Google Chrome seems to take over some of my documents. Please advise. And I am not that tech savvy. Happy 4th of July~ brooke1
Thank you for the answer. The little icon that would show the green is gone. And when I checked the Windows Security system, I say than many of the things, such as Firewall, etc. were turned off . And I was unable to turn them on. I tried to run the reinstall and uninstall but could not. It gave a link to Norton to do it manually, but all I saw the Uninstall, and no reinstall. I am not sure what to do now. Where do I get the reinstall Norton? Thanks so much

You need to be logged into a Windows account with Administrator privileges for the reinstall part to run. Restart your computer and log into an admin account.

The other day I ran the reinstall and uninstall from a link that Norton gave me. I had thought I saved it but it does not seen to be working. I apologize, but what Windows account would I use. I have never used Admin. privileges. Thanks so much
If you only have one user account on your computer, chances are it already has admin rights. Check in Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts\Manage Accounts If you see Administrator under your user name, you have admin rights.
Here are the instructions for using the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool, just in case you need to run it again.
Download the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from here www.norton.com/nrnr If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility. Run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool. Reboot. Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available. Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.
Thank you for your help. I am getting an error message, so to speak and given a link to do it manually. When I go to the manual it just has the Uninstall. But I guess you then get the install with the Norton Admin. I will work on it more. Thanks so much

You have to restart your computer after the uninstall before the reinstall can run.
I did uninstall and restart; but nothing came up to reinstall. I tried to get the download; but Norton cannot verify the serial, even though I still have the original email from 2009.
Let's try another reinstall route. This time you will use the Norton Removal Tool and you will download the installer from your Norton Account.
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here www.norton.com/nrt If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility. Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel. Reboot. Run the Norton Removal Tool. Reboot. Log into your Norton Account from here www.account.norton.com Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product. Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available. Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.
HI, Thank you for the information. I went to the link and it did take my serial number and I was able to reinstall Norton.
I got another # from Norton and they said to register it on my account. But when I tried, I got a message We are unable to proceed with Norton account at this time. Try at another time. My subscription goes to 2014
I ran a full scan...
I have spent the whole day on this and when I went to do something, I got an error message..8505...When I went to the site it said to uninstall and reinstall????
But my little icon is back and green.
Thank you to everyone who helped. I know where to come now.
Sorry if I missed it, but what is your operating system, and which browser are you using (please include version - such as FF 21, FF22, IE 8, IE 9,etc)?
<edit> Since this thread is marked as solved, it would be a good idea to start a new thread spelling out your remaining glitches.
