Is there a fix or patch for the DNS problem?

Can any one help? I’ve just downloaded and installed NAV2009. I noticed that the ‘Definitions’ were 42 days old so I clicked on the ‘Run LiveUpdate’ button. I couldn’t connect to the server. I kept getting an error message 8921,229.

I know others are having the same problem, I was wondering if there was a fix or patch available.

If you find any incorrect entries in DNS, I suggest you to check the post from Eric Carlstrom, Information needed

I am having a problem with connecting to Norton for Updates, as well.  I am not completely sure that it is a DNS problem however.  I have looked at the DNS settings under my network connection, but find they are set to DHCP like the IP's.  However, I have a workstation connected to the same wireless router, and I can access the tools and downloads easily.  Am I looking in the wrong place?  I tried the command prompt, but I am more at home in *nix Terminals.  :)

1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
2. Do one of the following depending on your operating system:
  - For Windows Vista: Click the Network and Internet icon, and then click Network and Sharing Center. In the left pane, under Tasks, click Manage network connections.
  - For Windows XP: Double-click the Network Connections icon.
3. Right-click the network adapter that is currently active, and then click Properties.
If the User Access Control appears, click Continue.
4. In the Network Connection Properties window, under “This connection uses the following items”, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
5. Click Properties.
6. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, on the General tab, check the DNS server settings.
If “Use the following DNS server addresses” radio button is selected, check the server addresses. Make sure that the DNS server addresses displayed are the same that are provided to you by your Internet service provider or your network administrator.
If the DNS server address starts with 85.255.11x.x, then it is more likely that the DNS cache has been poisoned as the result of a Pharming attack

Thanks for the prompt reply!  Unfortunately, I checked all of that, and everything was set to automatic.  So I guess that means there probably isn't a problem with the DNS...  I also suspected the user profile being corrupted when I couldn't activate NIS '09 earlier, so I created a new user and was able to activate, but was still unable to update.  I have cleaned the registry, ran analyzers and external virus scans and nothing has turned up.

Thanks again!

Have you tried the steps in the document 8921,229 ? If that doesn't work, try the steps given below.

-Click Start>Run, in the Run dialogue box, type cmd and click OK.
-Type ipconfig/flushdns and hit the enter key on your keyboard.
-Restart the computer.
-Run LiveUpdate.

Do you have any other firewall program installed in your computer?

Also open IE> Tools> Internet Options> Connection tab> LAN settings > check Automatically Detect Settings> Ok

Then under Connection tab, remove all the entries under Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings.

Let us know the result.

Well, I tried to try step one.  However, I was unable to connect to the site.  I am going to give the flush a try and see what happens.  I’ll edit when I am done.

Thanks for the replies.  I’ve downloaded and installed Malwarebytes AntiMalware.  It didn’t find anything.

I’ve checked the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” and the “Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically” is selected.  There are no numbers there.

I’ve tried the document 8921,229.  That didn’t work.  Same problem.

I’m running the latest Firefox, so I could not do what you asked.  How do I check the settings in Firefox?

I have Ashampoo Firewall v1.2 on my computer, but I’ve tried the Live Updates with the Firewall program disabled.  It made no difference.

I’ve also tried the ipconfig/flushdns bit.  That didn’t work either.

Please help if you can.

I think I’ve found the problem on my computer.  Disabling the firewall program wasn’t enough.  As soon as I uninstalled it, I could then connect to the server.

It now passes “Check for Updates” – completed, “Download Updates” - completed, but it fails on “Process Updates”, it says “Failed to complete”.

Can you help with this?

When it shows “Failed to complete”, click View Summary and provide the error information shown there. Also, try running LiveUpdate after a restart. Some of the updates requires a computer restart in between.

It worked this time!  It was my Ashampoo Firewall v1.2 that was causing the problem.  I’m now using CoMoDo Internet Security (free version) and everything seems to be OK. :smileyhappy:

Are you using Comodo Internet Security along side NAV? I hope you didnt install there antivirus and only installed the firewall. Also Comodo is free to begin with.

Kimmy,

Good to know that your problem is fixed now.

A NEW! Information from this thread: Ashampoo Firewall may create conflict with LiveUpdate. Thanks for that, Kimmy.

Keep on posting your thoughts and Cheers!

Yogesh

I only installed the Firewall part of the program.  I didn't bother with the AV part.  I thought there might be a conflict.

Comodo is just as good as Ashampoo.  In fact it's slightly better when you consider it doesn't clash with NAV2009.

Thanks for all the help and support.  Nice to know you're here.

Cheers,

Kimmy

Need any help with Comodo just ask me. I used it for a long time along side NOD32.

Alright, I tried ipconfig/flushdns, as well as the options under internet options.  Unfortunately I had no luck.  I did discover that it is not afraid of https://  in general, just in the case of Norton/Symantec sites.  Going to test it on Kaspersky's online scanner.  I have cleaned the registry as well, after the problem began.  Going to peruse the rest of the internet options as well.  I'll let you know if I find anything that works!  :)

Chris

I solved my problem by uninstalling my old firewall program.  Disabling it, didn’t work for me.  It had to be removed.  Have you tried removing yours?  What about Windows firewall?

I did not have a previous firewall, beyond Microsoft's that is.  Right now I am in process on installing version 16.2.  Some have said the Live Update issue with ver. 16.0.0.125 could block updates.  I will let you know what happens, and if it still does not work, I will try and uninstall the windows firewall.  Thanks for your help!!

Chris

From what I’ve been hearing, Windows Firewall is all but useless.  You might as well disable it and use something like Comodo (which I now know works with NAV2009 without conflict).
