Is Windows Firewall staying on?

Vista 32 bit Home Premium, Vista SP 2

Desktop PC

NIS 2010 17.7.0.12

Ok I have the NIS installed with the firewall on. Just concerned, I don't want there to be 2 firewalls on at the same time

When I  I check at Control Panel> Security> Windows Security  and click security Center

under Firewall it shows Norton Internet Security on. When I click "Show me the firewall Programs on this computer" It shows Norton on and Windows off.

When I  I check at Control Panel> Security> Windows Security  and click Windows Firewall

it says windows firewall is off

But when I go to Windows Task Manager>Services Tab> and then click the services button in the lower right hand side

when I scroll down to the item

Windows Firewall

Status Shows STARTED  and START UP TYPE IS AUTOMATIC

So is the window firewall really still on? I just don't want there to be conflict. I thought NIS would stop the Windows Firewall and change the start up type to manual

Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to change the start up type myself?

Calls, the Windows Firewall service is used for other system functions besides the firewall itself, for instance this is how Windows determines that some files 'came from the internet' while others didn't.

Everything is OK, this is normal, the NIS installation has done everything that needs to be done, if the Firewall UI says it is off, it IS off, so, leave it be Calls.

So it is not acting as the real Firewall?  In the services it just indicates "Firewall" function. So I'm guessing that many of these windows services will say they do something, but there are other functions they don't mention?

I guess it makes me wonder since the quick fix indicated some tweak involving the windows firewall

So I can leave the START UP TYPE to automatic and not worry that it shows status as started? As long as it shows off in the control panel?

Why does Windows have to be so confusing??

Would any other NIS 2010/Vista Home prmium 32 bit confirm they see the samething I'm seeing, just to let me know mine is ok?

If I remember correctly, there is a down arrow alongside the ON button on the firewall line.  If you click it down, there will be a drop down message that says One of the installed firewalls is one.

It is off, as the Norton firewall is on.

But when I go to Windows Task Manager>Services Tab> and then click the services button in the lower right hand side

The sevice was started, but will not be used until the firewall requests it to be used - which won't happen because the Norton firewall is the controlling factor.  I do beleive if someting causes the Norton firewall to be disbaled, this will enable the windows firewall to be run.

So is the window firewall really still on? I just don't want there to be conflict. I thought NIS would stop the Windows Firewall and change the start up type to manual

The windows firewall is in fact off.

No

Now, if you look closely at the Control Panel> Security> Windows Security  and click security Center >Firewall, you will see it says FIREWALL - not WINDOWS Firewall, thus with the Norton firewall ON - yes the firewall for your system is on.  Is it the Windows Firewall?  In this case, No.  Hopefully that explains it clear enough.  This (as I understand it) was done so that the Secuirty Center would not alert that there was no firewall (when the windows firewall was off) and the Norton firewall was on.

Hi Calls,

It is the same on my Windows 7. You are fine.

Best wishes.

Allen

Yes. Another function in Vista is to differ between Public and Home networks, and which Windows services are allowed on each.

The way NIS does it is the proper way of integration, it turns off and supersedes those proper firewall functions, while not breaking other functionality in the process. Your quick fix succeeded. If it pleases you, you can uninstall and reinstall, you'll see it is configured in the same way, Quick fix or no quick fix.
