Gotta love Microsoft right? I had an issue on my older Windows 10 Pro daily duster machine a while back where, every boot I would get a screen telling me the BIOS needed to be restored. I was asking myself, WHY? Nothing had updated in Windows Updates ( BIOS updates from Dell have appeared there in the past ). Evidently one did appear there, never completed or was corrupt. I downloaded and updated the BIOS from the Dell site and wallah!! Problem solved.
Oh 24H2 has been soooooooo much fun to deal with. 23H2 was stable, they should’ve pushed back EOL on that and worked on getting the bugs out of 24H2 instead of trying to force everyone to upgrade. Patch Tuesday shouldn’t be a scary prospect.
I did notice the Norton icon systray delay again, so that’s not Windows, that looks to be AvLaunch being a little slow to load so mystery solved there. I just did another uninstall/reinstall that’s cleared up the Protection Score visual glitch, so maybe that’ll have an effect on that as well.
I had to update back to 26.2.10802 today as the installer I’d kept was for 26.2.10718, and unearthed another minor issue with Protection Score. It decided that the update was a good time to un-ignore the device-specific recommendations I’d previously chosen to ignore. It really shouldn’t be doing that.
I’m on 26.2.10802 with Win 11 25H2 and starting today, Norton keeps crashing with event manager exception code “0xc0000409”. This was apparently already a problem 25.xx but this time it’s affecting me too. Are people aware of this yet?
All: Are any of you seeing the exception error 0xc0000409 with the caption “STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN” ?
@Sim26 What is the FULL event logging for your instance? Please post so we can review for you. There are 4 sections to deciphering an exception error code, the first digit is 0 meaning, there isn’t a fault since 1 would represent a fault. Here are some suggestion to TS your side:
AI Overview
Several tools exist to decipher exception codes, ranging from specialized Microsoft system utilities to AI-powered code analysis tools. The best choice depends on whether you are debugging Windows OS errors (Microsoft Error Lookup), application exceptions (Sentry), or code vulnerabilities (Snyk Code, CodeRabbit).
Here are the top tools for deciphering exception codes:
System & Windows Exception Tools
Microsoft Error Lookup Tool (ERR.exe): A command-line tool designed to decode hexadecimal or decimal Windows error codes, including those from HRESULT, NTSTATUS, or Win32 errors.
SLUI.exe (Windows): A built-in Windows program that can be used via the command prompt (slui.exe 0x2A [code]) to display detailed error descriptions.
Sentry: A popular, comprehensive error monitoring tool that tracks exceptions across your stack, providing context on crashes and user experience, say Raygun.
Bugsnag: Features automated crash detection and provides diagnostics for prioritizing fixes, according to Raygun.
Rollbar: Delivers real-time notifications and groups errors, allowing developers to identify and resolve issues, as mentioned in this Medium article.
My suggestion ISN’T that this is not an Norton issue but rather to TS your side with your specific hardware. Lets see whether each of you have something showing in even viewer that comes back as a “common” issue and follow that.
@Sim26 Which thread would you like us to follow? The one in this thread or the other you created here:
26.3 update and my ignored recommendations have been un-ignored again, so between the last time and this, I think it’s safe to confirm that this is something specifically happening only when Norton updates.
But I didn’t understand why they kept previous versions in this topic since many are on the current version, because Norton forces a product update unlike Avast which gives the option to update the program whenever the person is comfortable doing so.
The thread is marked for the current 26.xx series and its versions. We can track progress or the lack of it by putting all the 26.xx issues in one place for Norton to review. We did the same with the 24.xx and 25.xx versions as well. Hope that helps.
Edited: In Norton the only way to prevent updating to the next release is to disable updates. It will also not download and install virus definitions with this disabled. So yes, there is the need to separate the update process to defs and feature product updates.
Latest update of Norton causes the yellow screenshot borders to appear around my Chrome and Edge browsers on two of my computers that have the full updates for Version 25H2. This seems to be a major issues for me since it implies Norton is recording my browsing session unless they state it’s a glitch or something like safe web.
Starting the Anthropic Claude app causes high CPU usage and continuous increase of memory usage (GB over GB) by “Norton Software Analyzer”. This continues to happen even after closing Claude, until you are forced to reboot to regain the usage of your PC.
