(To clarify, it’s the names of files that come up under the ‘Scan in Progress’ text on the scan box. I read on another post these names could be the files the virus checker is looking for, and not ones that are actually on my machine, but I recognised the name of one of the viruses from a website I’ve been on that’s advertisement-heavy, possibly as standard spyware, so I’d appreciate it if I could be advised on this anyway. Thankyou.)
Cee,
If you have other "malware detection" programs such as Spybot installed, the definitions used by those programs may show up in the Norton scan as the name of a virus although it is only part of that program's database and not a virus itself.
I have seen the same thing if I observe the files that Norton is scanning.
I installed a demo version of Avast! after finding this problem, and have since uninstalled it, as I only installed it to double-check Norton was working - so it had no effect on the names appearing on the scan. I don't have any other antivirus systems installed on my computer.
By 'I have seen the same thing', do you mean that this is normal to see? Also, since I saw one that had clearly come from an ad-heavy blogging website I'd visited, is this probably a virus related to helping the website and so not a really destructive virus?
Norton Security Products, such as Norton Internet Security, will Scan for Viruses and Other Internet Threats to see if they are on your computer, and that is why they appear as it is Scanning. If your Virus Scans - as well as keeping the Product up-to-date via LiveUpdate every-few-hours and doing at least two Full System Scans-a-week as well as Upgrading to the latest N.I.S./Norton Security Product if it is compatible with your Software, e.g. Windows - then there is nothing to worry about.
Please note that, just because it is Scanning for these Virsues and Other Internet Threats does not mean that they are on your computer.
Thanks! I think I'm on Norton Antivirus 2008, so I should be covered well. However, I never used to run LiveUpdates myself, because I thought they updated themselves when needs be. This will have put me at risk in the past, but surely if when it's updated the scanner is finding nothing, then I don't have these threats on my computer?
Un-less you have changed the Automatic LiveUpdate Mode, it should still be Checked as Interactive, which only Downloads Critical Files. To change this to Express Mode, which Downloads all Update, although you will be given a pop-up from LiveUpdate asking you if you want to Install Updates which Require a re-start: Start > Control Panel > Symantec LiveUpdate > General tab.
