Java not installed but Javascripts still working somehow - security risks?

Hi,

I'm not really sure this is the right place to ask but someone brought up someething I had not considered and this was the only place I could think of to ask.

Since re-formatting this PC, which uses Vista 64, I have not bothered to install Java. However, running Internet Explorer on medium security settings (the default) allows sites that require Javascript (and indeed 'functions' that specify 'if javascript is enabled you can do X,Y,Z' or 'javascript is required for this page' , work fine).

So the questions are:

1) Since I don't have Java installed, and Vista does not have Microsoft JVM I believe, what is making it work?

2) Should I be concerned about this, install Java (and if so can you disable it like Flash?) and essentially is there any reason I should be worried about spyware/viruses? (which leads to 3)

3) Would Norton still have detected anything 'funny' going on with whatever was running the javascripts? I know Norton can detect trojans etc in an install of Java as I have had that happen before, but would it necessarily also protect against such things if Java is not installed?

In order to save making another post, out of curiosity does anyone know what the following folders in Windows are for:

Thank you for any advice you can give.
