Just Curious

Does one need to disable NIS in order to install adobe flash player?

Over on the Adobe forums they say you have to disable your security in order to install the flash player.  I have never done that and yet have been able to install flash player. I voiced that and was told I was wrong.

Do folks here disable Norton in order to download flash?

If you you needed to reboot you would have seen an alert to reboot. Also you can upgrade to NAV 2009 for free. What are you using for a firewall?

This Thread by this User indicates that there was a Re-start Required: http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=29196.

You only need to use a Firewall for Norton AntiVirus 2009 as it has no Firewall; I would Recommend N.I.S. 2009 when your Norton AntiVirus Subscription Expires.  Please check out this Thread for More Information: http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=18195.

From what I understand not all updates require re-boot. In fact I think there are few  that do

Normally they don’t but there has been a product update recently. Than it is possible

HI Calls  When I upgrade adobe flash I usally uninstall first using the adobe flash uninstall tool  then I down load both versions of the flash player with out turning off norton nis. . Have a nice day ALF60

Hi Calls,

I have never disabled Norton to install any software other than Microsoft service packs and new versions of Internet Explorer (which also is part of the OS).  I, too, use the Flash Player uninstaller and manual install method and have never had an installation issue.

Hi Calls,

Like the others, I never disable NIS in order to update my Flash Player - first I save the latest versions to my desktop, then I uninstall the previous ones and finally install said latest versions :-)

I install the new versions right over the top of the old ones.  Adobe seems to have cleaned up the uninstaller.  I never have to disable Norton.

Thanks all. I knew that sounded too crazy, to turn off the Norton to install flash. I have never done that. And when I offered my two cents to people that they did not have to do that when using Norton, I was blasted by one of the "gurus" there.

It just concerned me that they would throw that out there (to turn off security) and in the posts that suggested that, they didn't even tell the user to disconnect from the internet.

Thank God for the great help offered here.

Thanks all
