The latest entertainment search data study from Norton Online Family users confirms that kids around the world love to read about celebrities, especially their favorite singers and musicians. Using data from more than 20 million anonymous searches by children governed with the parental safety service, Norton Online Family, the researchers found that celebrities like Justin Bieber and John Lennon topped the kids’ search lists in 2010.

One of the things I like about this study is that it demonstrates for parents how universal our tastes in music have become. The Norton Online Family program is available in a free version in 25 languages (and in a premium version in the US), so it is widely in use now on a nearly global basis. Parents who use the service have an easy way to keep up with their children’s changing musical and other interests. I have found this comes in handy when purchasing gifts or simply having new dinner time topics of conversation. “I’ve heard about this song ‘Waka waka’, why is it so popular?” Sometimes, just by reviewing my own children’s web visits, I learn about cool new YouTube videos in the middle school rotation or trending topics before other parents are even aware. While my kids remind me nearly daily of how hopelessly “uncool” I am, using Norton Online Family makes my “coolness gap” feel a little smaller.
