Attorney General Jack Conway had his ID stolen and thousands of false charges piled up on his credit cards. Fortunately he caught it early, worked with his bank to clear the charges, but now has a mission to find the bad guys with his new Cyber Crime unit. Go get 'em!!
He suspects his credit card information was stolen in the most old-fashioned manner possible, by a restaurant employee. They've seen a number of similar cases in his area. After the criminal obtained his credit card data, either they or another criminal changed the card's billing address so that AG Conway wouldn't see the unauthorized charges for a while. In fact, the way Conway became aware his card was compromised was when he tried to set up a new Itunes account and his card was denied because his zip code was "incorrect."
Lessons to be learned here are simply to habitually check your credit card statements online, be suspicious if regular bills stop arriving and make sure you are checking your credit records for any evidence of new accounts made in your name.
