Laptop HDD clone with Ghost 15 and upgrade HDD to a larger one for dummies

Dear Experts,

I must say that I'm lost. Even being an electrical engineer - I cannot properly complete a simple task: To upgrade laptop 250Gb hard drive to 500Gb hard drive with Norton Ghost 15 with Disc Clone feature.

Context:

  • Windows Vista 32 bit,
  • Norton Ghost 15,
  • the computer and original HDD working properly
  • and the task is just to copy the content/OS/"bootability" to the new Seagate HDD

The original HDD has three partitions C, D and F (two NTFS and one FAT32) - the two partitions are for the computer recovery and some tools for the HP made computer.

1) I do have the new HDD in the USB cradle and I formated it as "unallocated" one

2) I used the Norton Ghost with Disc Clone to copy the partitions starting from F, D to the new drive. I did not use the "Resize drive to ..." now "Copy MBR" while copying the two non-bootable partitions. I did not assing any new drive letters to them, as I thought I can rename them later on on Vista with diskmgmt.msc utility.

3) Now I am copying the bootable drive C with dissk copy to the new drive that is still on the USB cradle. So far so good. I checked the "Resize drive to fill..." and "Set drive active" as well as "Copy MBR" options hoping to get the new drive providing me the Vista booting up when I finally install the new drive from the cradle to the place of the internal HDD at the bottom of the laptop. Because I could not select the new drive having the letter "C" I selected the "none" for the name.

QUESTION:

* Can I change the drive letter in any way in the new drive with help of the Norton Ghost boot CD or in any other way? I believe my computer will not boot if it does not have the drive letter C for the bootable partition - right?

I know my question is stupid and there are multiple threads about how to upgrade the hard drive, but I am lost with the details... and to be honest, slightly disappointed that Ghost users manual does not have "Upgrade your hard drive for dummies" step by step instructions related to the laptops and details related how to manage the drive letters...
