Got a brand new HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC this past January running Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Used the pre-loaded Norton trialware and the laptop was running fine. After the trial period ended I purchased and downloaded NIS 2011. Now it runs almost at dial-up speed. I use a calble internet connection. Processor is an AMD Turion II P540 Dual-Core 2.4 Ghz, 4 GB of RAM, 64-bit OS. I've scanned for virused, changed start menu items, and checked everything else I could think of. There is, and has never been another anti-virus progam on this computer. I mainly use Firefox 4.0. I just tried using IE 8 and it seemed to work fine. Help!
Pretty sure trialware was NIS 2011. Not sure if I installed it over the trial version. I was under the assumption that the trial version would be wiped out with the new download and installation.
You mentioned the "normal Windows uninstall." I assume that is going through Start -> All Programs -> Norton Internet Security -> Uninstall?

You are correct that the normal Norton install routine first removes any preceding (Norton) application so it should not have caused a problem to install on top.
Could you please answer those questions -- 4 one liners -- at the beginning of my message so we understand what route you took to install the replacement version.
Norton has two kinds of installation procedures -- one invollves a Download Manager routine that that downloads and installs as it goes along and the other -- which I pointed you to -- involves downloading and saving a single file and then when download is complete running that file to install the product.
I believe the second route is the safer and I recommend it combined with the Run as Administrator I mentioned.
Yes Normal Windows Uninstall is as you indcate and uses the script written and supplied by, in this case, Norton.
