Large Live Updates

Hi everyone.

Over the past few days LiveUpdate downloads have been well over 100MB.Usually, it’s only a few KB’s & they are only large in size when Symantec updates to a new version. I turned on “Smart Definitions” to see if this made a difference but even with it switched on, my updates are still well over 100MB. Anyone else experiencing this lately, is this normal?

NIS 2011

Win XP

Home Edition SP 3

HI tyler550,

I have not noticed any issues myself. Which version of NIS 2011 do you have?

Also, when you toggle the setting for Smart Definitions the first live update after that will always be much larger as NIS has to download the full set of definitions consistent with that new setting. But that should be a one time thing.

Have you checked your system time to ensure it is correct?

Do you see any other problems with NIS besides this?

What are you using to determine the size of the live update download? What type of internet connection do you have, dial-up or broadband?

Thanks

Allen

Peanut gallery here,

If the system is shut down for twelve or more hours between updates they will be larger than if they were being received on a routine/timely basis.

Hi Dick,

You do in fact have a valid point so no problem there. :smileyhappy: However, though after 12 hours it would potentially be larger than the typical it should not revert to a FULL definition download which the size the OP indicates is what is happening here.

For a full definition download to be required would mean that no updates have been received for far longer than 12 hours, though I don't know where that cut-off in time might be. :smileywink:

Best wishes.

Allen

I have been away for 3 weeks and my Norton 360 v5 live update is now 90MB. Unfortunately I am on a slow 38kb/sec line which is unreliable and connection drops after about 10MB at each update attempt. When I re-start the update goes back to zero and starts again. At this rate i will never ever get all the virus definitions. Is there a way to save a part update fo that it does not loose the data already downloaded before the complete file is transferred?

Hi KB10,

Is the connection timing out due to "no activity?"  Sometimes dial-up programs have a setting that will disconnect after a certain number of minutes, and downloads will often not count as activity.  You may be able to locate this setting and disable it, if that is what is causing the interruption in your downloads.

Allen,

I was thinking more along the lines of the previous few updates didn't complete and so the next one was an additive [ previous incomplete + new never downloaded] Now my question to you would be would something like the Intelligent Updater be useful here?

From the sounds of the speeds a 'sneaker net' solution might be faster. Perhaps there is a computer available with a faster, more reliable connection that will allow the updates to be downloaded only a CD/DVD or fresh drive which could then be used to update using a local connection. It would have to be faster :smileyhappy:

Thanks for listening

Thanks for responding Allen

Current version is 18.6.0.29

System time is correct

I have no other problems with Norton 2011 besides this.

When I click live update it lets me know how large the file size is.I am on an ADSL connection.

This issue stopped for a few days, all the updates have been small but it just happened again.I updated an hour ago, it was a small update,I tried it again just know  & the update is over 100MB...How can the size of the virus definitions & so on be that big in 1 hour? Something is wrong somewhere.

Hi tyler550,

I agree with you, this is not right based on what you are describing. I think you should uninstall NIS with the use of the Norton removal tool and then reinstall. Please follow the procedure below:

If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.

Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

Do a conventional uninstall of NIS via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thank you for your prompt responses Allen. I will follow your advice now & monitor the situation for a few days before providing further feedback. My opinion of NIS constantly wavers but my appreciation & respect for the tech support provided here remains the same. Thankyou.

Hi tyler550,

You are most welcome. We will do our best to get this working properly for you again.

Just to be sure, you don't have any other security software with real-time protection installed, correct?

Please do keep us posted as to progress.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Allen

I don't have any other security software with real-time protection installed. I have followed your instructions, everything is working fine except when I run LiveUpdate the following fails to update:

Norton 2011 IPS Definitions

Updates Intrusion Detection Engine

Status:Failed to complete

This appears twice.Any solutions? Thanks Again.

IPS Definitions have loaded this morning, why they wouldn't load last night despite rebooting my pc several times is a mystery to me. Live update definitions were a small size this morning,I'll keep my eye on it.

Thanks again Allen.

HI tyler550,

You are most welcome. :smileyhappy: Thanks for the update. Was there any other update at the end of all that that requested another restart? There was an explicit update pulled down that required a restart and I'm just wondering if the restarts you performed were done before or after that. Don't know if this was related to the problem with the IPS defs.

There could have also been some other transient problem which got resolved overnight.

I would recommend to keep an eye on it for a while and see if everything looks good after a week or so.

Please do keep us advised.

Best wishes.

Allen
