This is specific to LiveUpdate?

What version of NIS is this with (I assume NIS since here is where you posted <s>)

Can you give  Build numbers (Hellp / About) for LiveUpdate and for NIS? Note that if you are referring to NIS2009 it does not use LiveUpdate as we know it.

And perhaps the version of Windows and whether 32-bit or 64-bit?

csm600, in order to better understand where the problem can be occurring, you need to change a setting. Open up your System Properties (right-click on My Computer and choose Properties) and then select the Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery select the Settings button. In the Startup and Recovery dialog, de-select the Automatically restart check box. Now click on OK a number of times to save your setting and exit the dialogs. The next time this problem occurs, you should be presented with a blue screen with more information about what part of your system is causing the problem. These instructions are for Windows XP and may be slightly different on Vista.

Once you get that information, please provide it here.

Thanks for the replies.

I am using Windows XP 32 bit with service pack 3.

Norton Internet Security (I asume 2008) version 15.0.0.60

It was purchased as a license renewal / upgrade online through Symantec11 months ago.

I actually went through the procedure described above to dissable automatic restarting after a crash, however it did not change anything, the PC would restart anyway - No blue on crash, or error report on start up (exept for sometimes a message saying that the computer had just recovered after a serious error, when finished fully restarting).

The PC would crash after clicking on a link on the net. The screen would go black as if after a power cut, and then the PC would restart, and Windows would go through its usual checks after a crash / imprpper shut down.

I now have the PC working fine with all other updates carried out on the PC, but Norton Internet Security will be as it was on 4th August (automatic updates was ON at that time so it would have been up to date as far as that date at least).

However as of about a week ago, if I now let Norton update, I will imediately cause  the crashing problem, as I have discovered through a process of illinination.

The crash can happen in IE or Firefox (installed to test a theory), and the links are completely harmless. The one that I have made a note of as a problem, and have used as a test, opens up a new window in IE, but otherwise is just a hyperlink to a normal web page. It happened on some other links also though (one of wich was in my favourites), so the computer could go down on average about once evey half hour when surfing the net.

The PC is currently fine, but I asume my virus definitions etc. are slowly going out of date, until I get a response from Symantec as to whether it is a known problem. When it first happened, an internet search showd that a number of other people had experienced the same shut down problem as mine exactly, but that was a few days ago and nobody had a solution at the time, or had even made the link to Norton (if it was infact the problem in theyre case also).

csm600, this is the first that I have heard of such a problem and the symptoms that you describe are hard to explain.

A good first step might be to upgrade to the 15.5 version which can be found at the Norton Internet Security Product Update site. If the problem persists after that, we'll have to do more diagnosis.

Hello Reese,

I took your advice and updated the software through your link. Big mistake!

After installing ,runing live update, and running a scan, I went to test the use of the internet.

On clicking on the my test hyperlink, the PC crashed as before.

I therefore have restored my PC to a point earlier this evening, only to find that my original installation of Norton Internet Security will no longer work, as I suspect it has been deleted by the later installation.

I am now unable to even run a virus scan, and am probably on line completely unprotected.

Before the software update this evening I at least had a fully funtioning and protected PC all be it with virus definitions a few weeks old.

You need to please help me get my Norton Internet security working as before even if its without the latesrt live update file dowloaded,

as  I am in real trouble here.

It sounds like the new version was functional but continued to have the problem that you originally reported. It would’ve been better just to stay with the newer version. Using System Restore has probably caused a bunch of issues, as you’ve described. Your best bet now is to uninstall, run the Norton Removal Tool, and re-install, preferably the new version. If I misinterpreted your comments and the new version was causing other problems, then you should re-install the older version.

Hello Reese,

If I re install the new version, yes it may be functinal, but if the live update is alowed to update to the present then I will have the on line crashing problem, which is severe.

Is there a way to prevent the installation from updating to the present. Ideally I would like to have live update as it was on August 4th  my original restore point that worked well). Earlier tonight that was the situation I was in, which was at least acceptable for the time being, as although the live update was out od date, I had no crashing problem.

I set a new restore point tonight just before updating the software as you sugested. When the crashing returned, I restored back to that point from tonight, only to find that my Norton Internet Security does not work ( I cant even run a scan). That is where I am at now. Can I re install the software but not the very latest updates ?

Chris.

What you suggest should be possible. You need to switch to manual updates and others in this forum can describe that process to you better than I can at the moment. My concern, though, is that you’d end up with very old definitions which may not protect you as well as you’d like.
