Latest Version doesn't support mouse right click to scan individual files

and you have Targeted Scan & Explorer Scan enabled?

as test: Scan selected… txt, exe, pdf = Explorer Scan prompt

I’m not sure what you mean by that.

I have them in my Norton, yes.

But enabled? Do you mean currently active and scanning or just that they exist and I can use them?

Okay…looks like you’re setup okay.

That’s nice and all… but it doesn’t fix this issue that I have, which is that when I right click on a file and select the Norton Antivirus option to scan it… nothing happens.

if you’ve clean reinstalled Norton 360
then…what does Norton support say?

user to user – my Norton 360 v24.12.9694 (build 24.12.9694.895) prompts Explorer Scan [here]

Go to Settings > Notifications, and make sure that “Mute informational notifications” is turned OFF (red X).

In this new version, you’ll get a bottom-right screen notification “Explorer Scan is running” (or “Explorer Scan completed” if it’s a small sized scan). In case you’d like to see the scan in progress, as was in older versions, click on “See Details”.

There’s a chance that when scanning a very large folder, you’ll only get the notification once the scan is over. In case seeing the process is important to you, you can open that window by opening Norton and going to > Scans > Open Scans > Explorer Scan.

I hope this answers your problem.

Worked for me!

this popup window is horrendously slow compared to Norton 360 v.22, I know this is avast software rebranded norton and it is awful, They need to make avast be a rebrand of norton v.22 instead.

Horrible v.24 product, GenDigital has the bed

Thanks so much! Every time I tried to scan a recent download, it wouldn’t do anything, or at least I didn’t think it did anything. I had already gone into settings to see what I could do on my own, but never thought the mute was an issue. But I was soooo wrong! I followed your directions and it worked like a charm! Thank you, Thank you, thank you!

Unfortunately, having this “Mute informational notifications” turned OFF does not resolve this problem for me. My Norton is version is 25.5.10141. Any ideas, please?

Hello! I’m running Norton version 25.5.10141 and I’m unable to get Norton to scan a specific file after I right-click on it & then go to “Show more options” & then hover over “Norton 360” & then left-click on “Scan selected item for viruses”. Please note that I do have Targeted Scan & Explorer Scan enabled. Any ideas, please?

and you’ve run Norton LiveUpdate and Restart (not Shut down) machine?

and you’ve reviewed Targeted Scan & Explorer Scan settings

I have the same 360 version 25.5.10141 and when I right clicked on a file in Windows Explorer I click on Norton 360 and then on Scan selected items for viruses. I don’t have a Show More options.

After a few seconds of what appears to be no action I get the following popup on the scan results.

Thank you for getting back to me!

  1. I have ran Norton LiveUpdate numerous times and it completes without any problems.

  2. Please clarify what you mean by “run Restart (not shutdown) machine” - are you referring to the Restart option within Windows 11 or a Restart option within Norton itself?

  3. I have definitely reviewed Targeted Scan & Explorer Scan settings and they are both set to the “Scan all archives” option - as you indicated in that screenshot.

Hello @JKar275
W11 machine → Restart (not Shut down)

fwiw ~ my boiler plate:

If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup

Note: Norton Remove and Reinstall tool vs Norton_360_Remover here

Maybe, try Troubleshooting → Record a performance issue &or Enable/Send debug logs

Hello @bjm:

  1. Thanks for clarifying that when you mentioned “run Restart (not shutdown) machine” - you were referring to the “Restart” option in W11 machine. Therefore, I have run Norton LiveUpdate & then restarted my W11 machine at least 2 separate times - and the problem still remains.

  2. When I right-click on a file - I’m getting slightly different options in the drop-down menus than what your screenshot shows: my first dropdown menu doesn’t show Norton 360. I have to click on an option that says “Show more options”. I left-click on “Show more options” & then a new dropdown menu appears that definitely does have that same “Norton 360” option that your screenshot is showing. Then I hover my mouse cursor over “Norton 360” and immediately a second drop-down menu appears that clearly shows the same option that you have for “Scan selected items for viruses”. I left-click on this & nothing happens. 2 weeks ago, this action always resulted in a Norton dialog box popping up showing the results of a scan - but no such luck anymore.

  3. I greatly appreciate your suggestions about downloading & running the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool because it shows that “great minds think alike” Yesterday, I went onto the Norton Support website & found instructions on how to download & run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool. Everything went smoothly but the problem still remains after reinstalling Norton & running LiveUpdate.

  1. Yesterday, after this last step failed to resolve the problem - I did an online chat with Norton Support but after spending a good two hours with two separate technicians - the problem still remains. One technician had the unmitigated gall to tell me that I should disregard this problem because Norton LiveUpdate appears to run smoothly & that this alone is sufficient to protect my PC from any viruses. I told him/her that this answer was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! I was then given the option to be connected to the Norton Virus and Hacking team. It was getting late & I was exhausted. I will try to get in contact with this team today but I’m not very hopeful that they will fix this problem. I’m a pessimist by nature :joy:

Thank you very much for taking the time & energy to try & help me find a solution!!!

Hello @JKar275
Well, for Norton 360 v25. I’d run Norton 360 Remover → Remove only → Scour File Explorer for remnants → clean install Norton 360 from my Norton account. Even if your issue remains. You’ve now done basic troubleshooting. If you’re of a mind to play with this some more.

and you’re sure Notifications looks like

Hello @JKar275
fwiw ~ I can reproduce, as you describe, with Mute informational notifications = on/green.
Please confirm Notifications settings here

fwiw ~ on my side
“File Insight” runs okay with Mute informational notifications = on/green.
“Scan selected items for viruses” does not run okay with Mute informational notifications = on/green.
