Legitimate update?

This is the trial version that came with the computer which I bought at Circuit City.  I do not know why I would have the Polish version of a Norton product.  Everything in it is in English except for that particular update.  I have another version of Norton Internet Security 2008 which allows me to install it on up to 3 devices. I have not added it to this computer yet, as I was just getting it set up and let it run the trial version that was already on there.  If I add my subscription to this computer and the “sladnik podstrawowy” update was a fake, would it detect and remove it? Thanks.

I just activated the trial Norton Internet Security on a new Compaq PC, and it installed numerous updates via Live Update.  I clicked on details, and one of the updates was labeled “skladnik podstawowy”.  Is this a legitimate update from Norton?  I tried using the search feature on Norton’s website and could find nothing on it. The updates required me to restart my computer, with an extremely show 3-staged shutdown and restart as it “modified/updated” everything.  I just want to make something did not work its way into the update that was not legit.  Thanks.

Greetings,

It's possible that the list of components installed became corrupted at some point, resulting in an incorrect entry for a Polish update.

We have a tool that removes incorrect entries and adds missing entries.  You can download the tool here.  After you save the file, simply double-click it to run it, and then click Setup when the dialog appears.

Hope this helps!

I have the exact same question as PKValiant. My daughter bought an HP laptop at Staples in July. It was purchased in the US and is running an English version of Vista. She activated the trial version of Norton Internet Security (version 15.0.0.60) that came with it. One of the Live Update downloads was "Skladnik Podstawowy". So far no one at the Symantec Support Center has been able to give us any useful information. They keep asking for a Screen Shot of the downloads. Unfortunately there is no useful screen shot to give them. The only time the download name appeared was in the "details" link after the initial download. Since then we have not been able to find any listing of the specific downloads.  It would seem to be a simple matter (for a Security company) to look up in their data base and see if this is a legitimate download or a virus. If it is a Polish download (as has been suggested), then what is it doing on a US computer?

We have done a Google search for "Skladnik Podstawowy" and the only relevant hit (out of thousands) is this one. The rest are in Polish(?) or are the suspicious jumble of words that come with spam. The only recognisable word other than "Skaldnik Podstawowy" is "virus". Not very comforting to say the least!

Does anyone have any DEFINITIVE information about what "Skladnik Podstawowy" is and why it is on a US computer?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Hi cstewart,

Please see the previous post from jgreen on a possible solution to this problem. Let us know if this resolves the situation for you. Thanks!

We have confirmed that this is a legitimate update. The version that you have supports multiple languages and the referenced update is for the Polish language portion of it. As you’ve noted, the messaging for this is confusing and we are looking into ways to resolve this in the future. For now, though, be comfotable knowing that this is a legitimate update for your product.

Dear Reese Anschultz,

Thank you for your concise, direct response to my question. It is much appreciated. I'm glad to know that "Skladnik Podstawowy" is a legitimate Live Update Download (albeit a Polish download on a USA machine).

I do think that it would be helpful if there was a mechanism during installation to identify the country of use and thus avoid unnecessary downloads.

Thank you again for your response.

I can't find that exact string in the current list of updates but there is a similarly named item available for the Polish version of Norton Anti-virus 2007.

LiveUpdate has been designed so that updates can only come from Symantec so the update is probably valid. You should confirm, though, that this is the version that you expect to have.
