License Problem

I would like to thank Norton for wasting a day of my life.  Up to yesterday, my laptop worked with Norton for the past few years.  Yesterday Norton started providing me with a selection of different errors about my license and if it was active etc.  I tried support who were useless.  Eventually, I googled the last error and surprise! Norton told me to delete and reinstall Norton.  This I did and eventually the new installation was activated.  Thanks Norton.

Dear All,

I want to change my OS from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate (Clean Install). I'll do it maybe on Friday, the problem is I have 3 license of NIS 2010, all of them has been used, so if I try to install NIS in Windows 7, how about the license? Is it able to use?

Hi Peace_wanderer,

Welcome to the forum. Absolutely you can use the license when you reinstall on Windows 7. You should log into your Norton account at: https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do.

Note your product license key and use this when you reinstall under Windows 7.

You should also back up your Identity Safe data on your current installation so you can restore it on WIndows 7. More information can be found here.

In the event it gives you problems after installing on Windows 7, you can contact Customer Support here and explain the circumstances to them and they will take care of it for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Allen

Yes.  If worse comes to worse, you may have to chat with customer service, explain the OS upgrade and that should help you.  By clean uninstall, that should include uninstalling the NIS products from each machine, not just zapping the harddrive first.  As far as I know that shouldn't make any different to the ultimate installation, but since some posters here believe it might, there is no reason not to do that, too.  (Like throwing salt over one's shoulder.)  Actually, you might contact someone at customer service first, tell them what you are on doing, which will make it part of your record.  Andyhow, please come back and tell us how it worked out.

Dear all,

Thank you for help me, I'll do this maybe on Friday, when I finished I'll tell you all, thanks! :D

Hi Peace_wanderer,

You will be fine. Your license is completely valid and at worst it will take a call to Customer Service in the unlikely event you encounter any licensing issues.

We'll look forward to an update.

Allen

To avoid problems later p_w:

Are you making that clean install of WIndows 7 on one of the three PCs that has VISTA installed on and so reformatting the drive?

If you are then you will be OK since you will not be exceeding the number of licenced PCs used BUT the cental database at Symantec apparently does not get updated automatically when you uninstall or cease using a licence in that way.

So you may get a message saying you have exceeded the permitted number of PCs under your licence although given it's on the same PC you may not.

If you do have any problem like this then just get in touch with Norton Customer Support -- here's my boilerplate on this:

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there.

You can choose CHAT or Email; phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

We have plenty of feedback from customers that the on line CHAT is the best route for speed and simplicity. There can be a very long wait for phone apparently.

If I were doing it myself, Huw’s method would be the one I would follow.

How about if I uninstall NIS 2010 first, then I re-format my Notebook?

Hi peace_wanderer,

Yes, you can uninstall NIS 2010, then wipe out your notebook, and, after installing Windows 7 on it, install NIS 2010.

You can download the latest and full installation package of NIS 2010 from over here:

http://www.norton.com/nis10

Also, you will need your product key to activate NIS 2010 after installing it on Windows 7. Please fetch your product key from your Norton account and keep it handy:

http://www.mynortonaccount.com/

As AllenM has said, do not forget to back up your Identity Safe data if you use Identity Safe.

As huwyngr and other posters have said: if you run into any difficulties during the activation of NIS 2010, simply contact Symantec Customer Service. In addition, to thoroughly prepare yourself for Windows 7, and for Windows 7 in connection with Norton products, please check out these links:

If you are planning to change the OS, on a notebook above all, make absolutely certain before you commit to it that the manufacturer has available for that specific model all the drivers and utilities in versions for Windows 7 before you start or you may find that essential functions, like the Fn keys or the graphics, do not work correctly.

I do support over on Compuserve on laptops and pc hardware and we frequently find that laptops that come with a certain version of Windows on only have the files for that version and not for later versions -- quite unlike desktops.

Continuing that thought:

Now is the time to go to the manufacturer's website and download the entire package of drivers, etc.  You will need.  Keep in mind that there are some drivers that will be universal for any operating system and some that will be particular to Win 7.

Now, I've found that HP is an exception in this area.  They have installers that launch from their website; and most of them are very effective.  Do some reading ahead of time on their site.  They'd probably have you install Win7, update your OS with MS update, then download/launch the apps and drivers you need from their site.

But before doing any of this, remember to download and run the pre-installation app from MS that checks your computer to see what you need for Win 7 and what problems you might have.  An earlier poster gave you that link and it's easy enough to find on your own on the MS Win7 site.

Please come back and let us all know how it worked out.

Dear all

Now I use Windows 7, and I able to use the license with no problem, thak you! XD

You did fine.

Good luck with your new OS.  And stop back occasionally and give some advice to others.
