Live Update cannot download updates

I did the initial install of NAV 2010--3 PC on two machines. Both operate off the same wireless intenet connection. No problems whatsoever with first machine. Second machine (HP Mini using Win XP) loaded software fine, would start to run Live Update, but after downloading a small fraction of the updates would suddenly stop the downloading process, yielding a "not all of the updates were successful message". It would incorrectly show a green checkmark--Downloading Updates--Completed--when  maybe only 500K of 30+MB had actually been downloaded. But would correctly show a red X against Process Updates--Failed to Complete.

I have spent eight painful hours on this with online and telephone support. This is not an internet problem (the other machine uses the same internet connection; the machine in question has no problem downloading huge files in any other setting--the problem only occurs with Live Update). No evidence of a virus problem--The Norton techs ran a scan, and I had separately run a malwarebytes scan. It is not a firewall problem--all windows and router firewalls were disabled and the problem persisted (and the other computer had no problem with these firewalls). Techs have already unistalled and reinstalled NAV three times. Some possibility of interference from earlier Norton software on this machine, but NAV 2010 was supposed to ahev removed all earlier versions.

The Software is useless without the ability to download updates. I paid for 3 PC coverage but am only getting coverage on1. Any suggestions before I demand my money back?

Thanks for reply

Previous Norton software on this machine was NAV 2007, plus whatever 30-day free trial version was preloaded by the manufacturer (HP). Both should have been deleted.

No, no other security software on this machine, or Skybot type programs, or anything else (other than what's built into Win XP)

Machine where I'm having no problems is a new HP Windows 7 machine. Machine where Live Update won't work is an HP Mini, maybe 18 months old, that has a subset of the data/software of the primary machine and I only use when travelling.

Hello hhoran

When the techs uninstalled and reinstalled your Norton product, did they use the Norton Removal Tool 2 times with a reboot after each run of it? Since the previous version was an older version, the removal tool would be necessary. The removal tool would remove all Symantec products on that mini also. That preloaded security program would also need to be removed with a removal tool from that other company.

Since you have NAV, what firewall are you using?

The older free trial software was Norton, not another company. After I bought the machine and added the NAV 2007 software (where I already had a subscription) the new machine became almost unusable because conflicts between NAV 2007 and the Norton free trial software slowed the machine to a snail's pace. Thus I removed the Norton trial software a long time ago, (with processing speeds returning to normal).

Each time the NAV 2010 was removed, it was removed using the Control Panel add and remove software tool while retaining passwords and such so that my user key would transfer properly.Looking through the NAV program files, there are only two small files that have a pre-2008 time stamp (NISplug and NISver) so it seems unlikely that the problem is part of the NAV 2007 files that didn't get removed

My intention was to use NAV in conjection with the Windows firewall (again, this is a "tevel-only" computer I don't use very often); that Windows firewall is temporarily disconnected as part of this (so far unsuccessful) process of seeing if I can get NAV to work

The older version may have had a rudimentary firewall and did have a completely different way of handling live updates.  Ifn the techs did not use the toll, that would be the first order of business to get everything working correctly.

Also, if you are behind a router, please check to see that the settings in the router are configured correctly for each machine.  With NAV2010 there is no firewall, but there may be settings in whatever firewall you are using that aren't quite the same from machine to machine.  If you have a router, it will also have a firewall, as do some DSL boxes.

Hello hhoran

Please check in add/remove to see if there is a separate live update module listed there? I believe NAV 2007 had a separate live update module. Depending on the version of the Norton Removal Tool, it may not have deleted that old live update module.completely.
