Live Update failed - what to do?

Just ran live update and it failed. clicked on tech support, uploaded bunch of infos. Is my only option uninstall and reinstall? I really want to use this PC for other than babysit NIS2009! Can I reinstall NIS2008 with the product key of NIS2009? I have both CDs.

What is the error code?

For me it says. Norton 2009 IPS Definitions

There is a code if you click on it. Most LU Update errors have been server related. Have you rebooted and tried it agin?

There is no error code, like I used to get it in earlier version of NIS only that IPS Defintion, that is the Intrusion Definition Engine, Web Protection Definition, Virus Def and Symantec Security Content A failed - clicked on tech support, it uploaded all kinds of info and error logs. That’s all. I think the problem is with the Intrusion Preventions my Engine version 4.1.0.61, defintions version 20081220.001 - I seem to remember reading about it recently here in the forum. I really DON’T want to reinstall, I have set up too many websites in the parental block. I did the export to save it, but the import does not work. Also note an other  message a bit earlier tonight, someone with NIS2008 reported same with the LU error code. There must be something wrong on the server side.

yes i get the same sorry i cut off half way through my message I have it exactly the same as retired thinker. Everything is the same so, we just gotta wait for the server side to do its thing right?

OK. Sounds like we might have the same issue. Im using Norton Internet Security 2009 running O/S WinXP Home SP3. Had problems with Live Update back in October and had to reinstall. Now, this evening, I ran live update. Three (3) files failed to install: 1)Norton 2009 IPS Definitions 2)Norton 2009 Virus Definitions & 3)Norton 2009 Symantec Security Content A. So I have rebooted and attempted too update - FAILED. Been up 3 hours, tried reinstalling a couple times but FAILS the update. It detects 18+MBs of download but goes straight to FAILED UPDATES. The only software I pay money for is the one that gives me the most problems and stress. Seriously, I wish I had positive things to say. So please, if anyone has any ideas on how to fix the issue, please e-mail me: stormcrow14 at yahoo dot com. Thanks guys.

Same problem here. IPS and web protection updates failing to install. When I click on support, it says there’s a problem with my internet connection. I can surf fine and the connection is good.

I think I'm having a similar issue. Updated Windows a few hours ago, added an optional update, then found myself reverting back to the restore point windows just made and after the reboot, an error popped up. I didn't catch what the error was, but I believe it was in the 30##,## area, maybe a 3025,15? 3035,25? Not really sure. Anyways, auto-protect wasn't working, and norton refused to fix the issues and even manually turning whatever was turned off at the time besides auto-protect back on didn't result in anything. LiveUpdate also wouldn't update a few files, maybe 3. Tried to contact tech support and upload whatever files to them, it went through that process and when it FINISHED, it told me there was an error and the transfer wasn't complete. Uninstalled with custom, keeping my settings. Then reinstalled. Things seemed back to normal. Ran LiveUpdate and there were multiple update failures, not just 3 this time. Tried to upload logs again through that one click feature, or whatever it is and things all got sent, and as it finished it said it wasn't complete. Tried again a few times, nothing. Uninstalled full. Reinstalled. Things are the same, I have about 8 or more update failures, each time I try to run LiveUpdate:

Norton 2009 IPS Definitions

Norton 2009 IPS Defintions

NIS Engine Fallback

Norton 2009 Web Protection Defintions

Norton 2009 Web Protection Definitions

Norton 2009 Virus Definitions x64

Norton Internet Security 2009 Submission Control Data

Norton 2009 Symantec Security Content A

None of them offer a solution to the problem, I'm just directed to upload logs that fail to upload for whatever reason. I did happen to notice in the last 20 minutes that my NIS 2009 version number is 16.0.0.125, which I'm pretty sure is old.. and also my defintion updates are described as 139 days old. I still manage to get pulse updates, amazingly. Already tried Intelligent updater. Anyone got any ideas?

LU still failing .Only streaming virus definitions are working and rest i.e.

1.Norton 2009 IPS Definitions

2.Norton 2009 Web Protection Defintions

3.Norton 2009 Virus Definitions

4.Norton 2009 Symantec Security Content A

these all are failing to install......ran LU repeatedly.

Any ideas what is going on ???

Ok, I just ended up on this forum of the 1st time because I installed NIS 2009 on a new PC earlier today.  After approx 38+ MB of updates - a few items are failing to update (manual Live Updates):

Norton 2009 IPS Defs (Intrusion Detection)

Norton 2009 Web Protection Defs (Antiphising)

Norton 2009 Virus Defs

Norton 2009  Security Content (White List)

Many updates on this new installation did take place, the app is now at version 16.2.0.7 .

Now, another PC that has been running NIS 2009 for a couple of months (also at 16.2.0.7) is also having issues with the Live Updates failing so TWO diff PC's are having Live Update issues.

note: I wish I would have know about the 16.2.0.7 installation code for the new install from earlier today, I would have used that instead of installing from the retail disc and updating to 16.2.0.7

Hopefully we are all having this problem because of a known and soon to be corrected Symantec issue.

What also concerns me is that the overall status of NIS 2009 is "Secure" even though the above updates are continuously failing.

Can anyone tell me how to determine exactly which virus definitions are installed?   With SAV (Symantec Corp AV) and older version of NAV it's easy to tell exactly which definitions are active - but with NIS 2009 I don't see the definitions listed (so I can find out how far back my defs possibly are - comparing the known installed defs to the defs available for download from the <Intelligent Updater> Symantec site - I have no idea of how long I have been possibly missing updates - since the status says "secure" , who knows, updates may have been failing...).

I do not care for the overall layout of NIS 2009 - it's really awkward compared to older versions or the corporate Sym AV product (or AVG 7) - but I do like the fact that it's an all-in-one product that takes up little resources.

Thanks to anyone that can tell me how to tell exactly which definitions are currently installed on my NIS 2009 installation and hopefully the Live Update issue that everyone is having will be corrected in the near future.

i have the same probelm exactly . can anybody tell us what is going on ? and is there estimated time for solving this problem ?

hushdrops :

1.Run LiveUpdate manually ,a window will appear...........which , I know , is currently failing to install the updates.

2.After the process is completed , click on View Summary in the same window.

3.Here you can see which updates are installed.

Now you can check in the main user screen how old your updates are.

In the main screen , locate Definition Updates and next to this you can see how old the updates are

Shridhar:  The View Summary is where I got the list of the failed updates - that's all of the updates (none were successful) .

So unfortunately all of the of the (Live) updates are failing (I listed all of them in my previous post).

Important:   I'm still trying to find out exactly which version of a/v defs are installed

So I did what you listed in the 2nd part of your post to me:

I have already found "Definition Updates" on the "Main Screen" - but see the prob is that just seems to show the last time the an Update was ran - not the version of the defs currently installed (for example is states: 5 min ago, and if you click on it, it just gives the date and time of the last ran update - but that doesn't give specific / relevant / version info which is really aggravating, I can run it now and it will say 5 seconds ago, the updates will fail, so it doesn't really give the info we need).

You would think that clicking Help / About would show the defs installed instead of just the app version info - most ALL a/v apps clearly state the currently installed a/v definitions (I'm actually a network engineer and have been responsible for setting up SAV server farms for thousands of desktops and hundreds of servers using the SAV SSC, so I have quite a lot of experience with A/V apps which is why I'm surprised that the current def's aren't clearly displayed with NIS 2009, I'm sure there's a specific file that can be located which will tell the version but I'm in a hurry <at home> and would just like to know an easy place to quickly find installed def info).

Thanks  for your input Shridhar.

For finding the version ,etc of the updates ....got to

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}

(this number can vary)\Norton\Definitions

Under this you can find versions and everything else of each type of updates

Shridhar - Thanks for the reference to the gen location of the DAT files, I was too lazy to look it up this morning.  :-)

In a sub folder called "20090113.024" I see the last set of defs apparently to be installed (dated two days ago).

There are files that I suppose (in this version which I am not familiar with, not yet anyway ha) that contain the A/V defs, they are called "VIRSCAN#.DAT" <Nine of them, all dated on 1/13/09, the date of the folder>).

So now at least I know my last A/V updates were from two days ago and that the Live Updates have only been failing for a little over one day.

It's not cool that I wouldn't have noticed this if it weren't for that I installed NIS 2009 on a friend's PC - and since there's currently a prob getting updates I noticed this updating the new installation.

Because on my existing NIS 2009 install you wouldn't know that anything is failing - the overall status is Secure even though the updates haven't happened successfully for over a day (the latest update avail for manual install is dated 1/14, so Live Update is having an issue so you'd think the over ok' secure status would let the user know the updates are failing!).

Then it's a pain to have to look deep into the files to see the actually installed a/v definitions - this info should be avail in the "main scree" - instead of just the last time an update was ran.

So my NIS 2009 main screen shows "Secure", Def Updates show they happened minutes ago - all the while the actual definitions aren't updated.  I understand there are issues with updates failing sometimes but the real problem I have is that the app doesn't let you know that the updates are FAILING and there's no easy way to see the currently installed updates - I'm repeating myself, it's late, hopefully the next time i log back on the issue will be fixed or I'll just install the manual 1/14 defs.

Thanks again Shridhar for the .DAT file location (it's similar to prev versions).

LU problem seems to be solved.

All updates installed successfully .

Run LU manually and get the updates.........if not first time then run it again ......but the problem has been solved

I just noticed I have the same dates on the folders there, as the dates that show up by clicking the "History" link in NIS 2009's main window, which causes the "Security History" window to appear, then from the dropdown-menu-thingie select "Intrusion Prevention", then under the Activity heading some of the entries show some version numbers and dates for a couple different things - the dates there appear to match my dates at the location you mentioned above.

For instance right now in my "Security History" Intrusion Prevention window I've got one entry there that says "Intrusion Prevention Engine version: 4.1.0.61 Definitions Set version: 20090113.003" which presumably is a date (2009/01/13 or Jan. 13th) ... although that was like 36 hours ago... hmm... I thought those things got updated more often than every 36 hours, considering that I've run manual LiveUpdates about 5 times already just today...guess I'll have to start paying more attention to what it's doing during its LiveUpdates.

Anyway, the info there seems to correspond to the folder location you mentioned, at least as far as having the same dates - although I have no idea how to interpret that folder's contents (the files in that directory have strange names). Also I don't know if my Security History window only just lists successful updates (?), as I just cleared the logs a couple of days ago so I can't go back in time to look for a pattern there - if I hadn't updated anything at all, would those date listings still appear there? I dunno.

Reason for edit:

I guess I was wrong  :smileysad: about there being meaningful dates in the "History" Security History Intrusion Prevention area, because I just did a manual LiveUpdate which claimed that the following updates had been successfully applied:

-Norton 2009 Web Protection Definition

-Norton 2009 Streaming Virus Definitions
-Norton 2009 Virus Definitions

and *yet* the Security History dates still show the exact same dates from 36 hours ago (yes, I 'refreshed' the category, no difference, even closed all Norton UI windows and reopened them for good measure, no difference). So apparently those are two different things... or something.

wait... now I'm totally confused - more so than usual :smileywink: - because I just re-checked the directory that Shridhar cited, and it also shows the 36-hours-old stuff as being the most recent! (yes, I 'refreshed' that too). So I don't know what to think. Shouldn't there be a folder there with new dates on it in that directory, since I just did the LiveUpdate that included new "Virus Definitions" (not just the streaming updates) ?

j2000 ,

The intrusion prevension definitions do not require frequent updates....they are updated once in some days.

You can check for a file named 'streamset' in this path

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs\20090114.024

This way you can identify when pulse updates were run successfully
