Live Update failed - what to do?

Where are your error codes when you click on help?

Can someone from Symantec confirm that;

1. There is a general problem at the present time with the Live Updater.

2. The LiveUpdater overwrites the signatures of the Intelligent updater.

As regards the second point, I can successfully update the current version build with the Intelligent Updater. I run the Live Update straight after and it downloads a small additional package but it FAILS on downloading the ordinary virus definitions for NAV 2009. If I then try to run the Live Updater straight after this it then states that I now need to run over 35MB of downloads!!!!

Therefore on my setup at least; Vista SP1, I cannot use LiveUpdate after the use of the Intelligent Updater. It simply ignores the IU package initially installed.

Any comments.

The intrusion prevension definitions do not require frequent updates....they are updated once in some days.

You can check for a file named 'streamset' in this path

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs\20090114.024

This way you can identify when pulse updates were run successfully

Thanks for the info :smileyhappy: - that explains my earlier confusion.

I just looked and I do in fact have the folder you mentioned, "20090114.024", so that's good. I'll poke around in there later and look at it some more. So far, I changed the window to display by "Date Modified" to find the newest files, and there are two files that were modified today (about the same time as my most recent manual LiveUpdate) - one of them is the "streamset.dat" file that you mentioned (the other is "VersionInfo.dat"). I made copies of both of those and opened them in Notepad just to see what was in them; the "VersionInfo.dat" was the only one that seemed to be human-readable but I'm not sure how to interpret its contents, part of which says:

LastPubRegDefVer=20090114.049
LastAssignRegDefVer=20090115.005

Anyway it shows that *something* occured today (20090115) so I guess that's good. :smileyhappy:

the problem solved . i was able to update norton AV with no errors 5 minutes ago.

It seems the problem is solved, I was able to complete the LU without failures and WITHOUT uninstalling and reinstalling!!! What a relief!!! Thanks all!

Everything is fine here as well. This just shows that panicing and uninstalling and reinstalling things every time there's a problem is usually not necessary. These things are almost always a server problem that will be fixed in a short time. Patience is a virtue, as someone once said.

Its 5 days in a row and i can't update norton by lu

Need help asap

Just to confirm what everyone else has seen - all of the updates in my original post were retrieved successfully this afternoon.

What worries me about this is that if you just rely on the background Live and Pulse updates to take place - we now can see that you can't tell if updates are failing.

The only reason i discovered this issue is because i just happened to install NIS 09 on a new machine today, I ran a manual Live Update on the new install - so i saw the failures at the end of the manual Live Update - other than initial installs i depend on the auto updates.

in this case not just the new install but my existing PC were both failing as was everyone else's - and what's scary is that there was nothing on my machine to notify me of the failed updates (the overall status is "secure" and Def Updates showed "xxx minutes ago" - from the pulse updates) - there was again nothing to show that the updates had last completed on 1-13-09 - missing over a day's worth of updates.

the only way to tell would be to (thoroughly) go thru the logs with the info that J2000 pointed out or to check the DAT sig files in the location noted by Shridhar

so what if there are issues with just your installation that prevent updates for days or weeks - hopefully something will show to let users know updates are failing because in this case the only way to tell was to run a manual live update or check the actual dat files.....

note: there were defs on 1-14, so it's not like they didn't complete on 1-14 because updates weren't available (if that were the case the updates should have just saw that there were no updates avail, not failed)

Norton does indeed have mechanisms to warn you if your definitions become dangerously out of date. One and a half days is not considered dangerously out of date and will not trigger any warning mechanisms.

Hi Christopher,   Can you tell us how to easily tell the exact date of the currently installed AV definitions of NIS 2009?   (from the "main screen" , or a "help about" - the same info that's avail in SAV).

Is there something more accurate than the "Definitions Update" info on the main screen (which only shows the last time an update was ran, not the date of the av def's).

Thanks

Alright. As of right now. Well, I had to reinstall the software. But on a fresh reinstall of the software, LiveUpdate installed 17.4MBs (11) Updates, and all of them were successful. So, I assume, at this time, I am up to date and running at where my software should be running at. I just find it frustrating that I have to stress over my security software so much. I happily pay my annual duties for peace of mine. But my experiences have been very much more stressful than peaceful. Thanks to everyone that joined in on this discussion. Thank you.
