Live Update Failing / Email scanning problems

NIS 20.2.0.19
Compaq Presario SR5310F 2GB Ram running fully updated Vista Home Premium

For about the last 4 months I've periodically found Windows Live mail downloading an email message at a snails pace. The green progress bar might take 30 minutes to move across and then would sit at the right hand side with the email never completing after several hours. I was blaming Live Mail, until a week ago when I discovered the problem appears to be NIS. I have seen the event described below happen three times in the last week.

When Live Mail is downloading an email as described above I bring up Norton. The last Live Update will be several hours old. I click on Live Update and NIS begins to download some updates and appears to complete them normally. However, when I close the Live Update screen I see that the last update date and time hasn't changed. I try Live Update again and this time I get a screen with red X's saying "Live Update has completed with an Unknown Error"

I run Norton Autofix and it finds no problems.

I do a shutdown with auto restart but my computer never completely shuts down.

I manually force the final shutdown and after the reboot every thing appears to be normal.

Yesterday I decided to turn off email checking in NIS. This afternoon I found no problems receiving emails but checking NIS saw the last Live Update was several hours old. Tried a manual Live Update and everything transpired as described above. When I tried to logout or shutdown nothing happened. I finally had to manually power off.

After reboot everything is fine and Norton updates normally.

I did try a full re-install a couple of days ago using NRnR; everything went smoothly but evidently didn't solve the problem. One other strange fact I've noted; when Norton quits Live Updating the last Update has almost always occurred between 11 AM and Noon.

Ideas anyone.
Tnx
Mike
