hi burmap - i haven't seen this problem and by the sounds of it there is definintely something amiss. i believe that 2008 uses a new LiveUpdate engine, and i'd probably recommend updating to that to see if the problem persists (its free with a valid subscription and can be downloaded here).

if that doesn't do the trick or you are not inclined to update, can you confirm your OS and Service Pack? also, are your virus definitions being updated regularly (either through automatic or manual LiveUpdate)? finally, have you encountered any other applications that "grind" your hdd?

Thanks for the response Mel,

I'm using XP Home and although I don't know what service pack, I Know it's the best you can do.  I get windows

updates regularly, and also Norton.  Norton is the only thing that hits my HD so hard.  I think this problem

started when I renewed Norton In Jan this year.

hiya Bill - if you pull up the task manager the next time it happens (press CTL-ALT-DEL and click on hte Processes tab of the Windows Task manager), you can look for the process that has high CPU utilization - that would be good to know. also, any luck with going to 2008 - we're you able to find it okay?

Have had the same problem on our computers running XP PRO 2002 Service Pack 2 since we upgraded from NIS 2006 to NIS 2007 some months ago.  Haven't timed it but when bringing up the computers each day from cold boot or hibernation, the disk I/O LED stays solid for an extended number of minutes and other applications are slow or non-responsive.  When I run the Process Explorer software (obtained from Microsoft.com in a previous virus removal effort) which shows more detail and gives more control than Ctrl Alt Del, it shows that the applications running are Norton, e.g., LiveUpate Engine COM module and LUCOMS.  Have the Symantec LiveUpdate conrol panel configured to check every 24 hours and to use interactive mode in an attempt to control when LiveUpdate runs, however, it appears that the slowdown occurs when Symantec is checking for the availability of updates, not when downloading and installing them during the interactive process which just takes a couple of minutes.  Note: Have a 5-7 mb confirmed bandwidth for Intenet access so that is not a bottleneck.

Any solutions short of changing software packages would be welcome.

Thanks,

Janet

hi Janet - i think there was a problem with LU in 2007 that prevented automatic LU from being shut down, even when disabled. try upgrading to 2008 and see if the problem persists (its free with a valid subscription).

Janet and Mel,

I use "Process Explorer" a freebie package that seems to work well.  I find that with that, I can suspend

AluSchedulerSve.exe and keep things from starting.  The Disk time is used during processing update

list and not down loading and installing.  I forget the name of the process that is running, but it is essentially

the one that controlls the live update.  Nothing else is running.

I think I'll have to get 2008, although, I don't know how it will work and how long it will work with XP Home.

Bill

hi Bill - automatic live update scheduler service is spinning everything up - definitely not right. think we're going to need some SYMC help to crack that one, as i can't imagine what would hang that one... on the question of 2008, it will work fine with XP home and is, i believe, smaller and lighter as a footprint than 2007.

Well,

I downloaded Internet Sec 2008.  It seems to be working, but I have not tried to update yet.  I am

dissapointed, however, because it still ignores my request to manually update, and starts all these call back

modules.  I think they have slightly different names, and are more varied, but they are still running.  I don't

think the update is completed, but these modules are doing something!

The next step is to try a update.

Bill

Hello Bill,

Thanks for posting the update. If you are still running Process Explorer, can you confirm that the situation occurs primarily during resuming from suspend or hibernate mode and what processes they are?

Matt

Mel, Janet, and Mat,

Thanks for everyone's help.  I just did an update, with 2008, and there was no 13 min. of HD wreaking time.

Mat, the reason I started suspending the AluSchedulerSrc was to keep it from trying to update when I did

not want it to.  It was hitting the HD before I started trying the suspending.  BTW, I have not been to suspend

the module with 2008; it seems to be protected.

Hi Mel,

Thanks for the info. on NIS 2008.  The posted link did not work for me but I was able to locate the upgrade on Norton's site in the downloads and it was free since I am still under subscription for 2007.  As a heads up for other users, after installing the 2008 upgrade I also had to reinstall the add on pack in order to regain AntiSpam capabilties.  My allowed and blocked lists were apparently cleared out during the reinstall and I think the AntiSpam did not integrate completely on one of the computers but I will deal with that later.

Hi Matt,

I had been experiencing the problem (unresponsive or slow applications for extended period) with the system under NIS 2007 when the system cold booted.  Don't believe I had the problem coming out of Hibernate mode but not positive.  Based on Process Explorer, the processes that appeared to be running were LuCallback Proxy Module and Live Update Engine Com Module.  However, the 2008 installation seems to have alleviated that problem on our systems and these processes now only appear to run for maybe 3 minutes.  The solid I/O led disappears around 8 minutes after reboot rather than 15 minutes when using 2007 and I believe much of that 8 minutes can be attributed to the loading of other software.  I'll see how this goes once a few live updates have run and report back in the future if there still seems to be a problem.

Thanks to all,

Janet

Hello again, Janet.

I'm glad to hear that the migration solved the drain on resources at boot, but I'm sorry about the lost settings and lack of a head's up on the Add-On Pack change that was going to be required. Thanks for your patience and do let us know if you have any questions or run into a problem with 2008.

Matt
