LiveUpdate causing XP to freeze ?

I’ve searched this forum for any messages describing a problem similar to the one I have. I’ve found lots of references to “LiveUpdate” and “freeze” but nothing that matches exactly what I see happening. If there is already a thread somewhere, please point me to it.

Here’s what happens. My wife’s PC regularly freezes. It can be while she’s working or while the system is idle and the screensaver has kicked in. There’s no obvious pattern. What happens is, … nothing. Everything is locked, the mouse doesn’t respond, nor does the keyboard, CTRL-ALT-DELETE has no effect. There are no error messages, and no way to look at the level of CPU usage or check any logs. The only way to get going again is to re-boot.

After the re-boot I use Event Viewer (Windows XP Home) to see if I can find any clues and every time I find that the last operation prior to the freeze was a Norton LiveUpdate scheduled by NIS2009 (automatic LiveUpdate is enabled). The operation seems to succeed, but then the system dies. I can’t find any error messages in the Norton logs.

But it doesn’t happen every time LiveUpdate runs. As far as I can tell, the system continues normally if LiveUpdate actually finds and applies updates, but the error seems to occur when LiveUpdate finds it has nothing to do.

Windows XP Home SP3. NIS 2009 16.5.0.135

What else have I tried ? Running LiveUpdate manually doesn’t give the same problem. Switching off automatic scheduling of LiveUpdate doesn’t help because Pulse Updates are still active (they show in the system log as a run of LiveUpdate) and they cause the same freeze. I don’t really want to disable them.

Has anyone experienced the same problem, or perhaps has any ideas what can be causing this ?

Thanks
