I disabled tea timer, but it has never interfered with Norton before. When I upgraded, which was some time ago, I did so when Norton popped up by itself and told me I could upgrade for free. I said ok and let it do its own thing, I don't know exactly how it uninstalled/installed itself. Before I reinstalled it said the last update was 6 days ago, so I'm assuming that's when the problem started. I am connected via hardwire ethernet to a 2Wire modem with AT&T DSL. I don't think anything has changed in the past couple of weeks that would cause this to happen from my end, but obviously I am not 100% positive.
Thanks for the information. Can you confirm your version of NIS 2011 from Support > About? It sounds like the problem started right after updating to 2011, is this correct? Have you rebooted the computer since installing?
Was tea timer enabled at the time you performed the update? If so, this could have caused a problem.
I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling NIS with the use of the Norton removal tool. Please note, if you have Roxio application please let me know before proceeding.
First, please ensure that the tea timer option is disabled. Then please proceed as follows.
If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.
Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.
Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.
Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.
Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.
For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.
Do a conventional uninstall of NIS via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.
Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.
Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.
Sorry about taking a while to respond. I wanted to give it a day or so to see if it would work itself out.
Version is 18.1.0.37
Yes, I have rebooted the computer several times since installing, but the problem arose a fair time after I upgraded to and installed the 2011 version.
Tea timer was enabled at the time of update, although the updated program worked fine for a while.
I followed the process that you described but it didn't work. This increased my suspicion that Advanced System Care was somehow blocking Live Update. I uninstalled it, rebooted and then tried running live update and it runs fine now. I will hop over to iObit's AVC forums to see if there is a solution from their end (it has given me this sort of compatibility issue before with other programs).
I received an alert that my anti-virus protection was out of date. When I open up Norton Internet Security (had 2010 version but it let me upgrade to 2011 for free) and try and run LiveUpdate i get the following error message: "Unable to connect to LiveUpdate server. Please check your internet connection."
My connection is fine, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Norton. I have no idea why it just decided to start acting like this. Granted I only have 23 days left on my subscription, but that shouldn't affect its ability to auto-update. I am running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 home premium and have iObit's Advanced System care and Spybot installed and in use on my computer. Could it maybe be something relate to one of these?
Also, I have a 2Wire router with AT&T DSL. It had to get reset a while back, but that was well before the last time NIS was updated (which said 6 days ago next to LiveUpdate). Not sure but maybe the router is blocking it?
This isn't Norton Support; it's a community based (e.g. open source/Internet based) support system. If you need an immediate response you should contact Symantec Tech Support:
Place the file on the Mac client and double-click it. It will expand the GatherSymantecInfo.command file as well as a folder called SupportFiles.
Double-click on GatherSymantecInfo.command. It will open a Terminal window.
Enter the administrator password (it will not echo on-screen) and press Enter.
On the "Please enter the subscription key..." window, press Enter to bypass this screen. A subscription key does not apply to Symantec enterprise antivirus applications.
Gathering information... will appear.
When completed the Terminal window will indicate that the information was gathered and saved to the desktop (SymantecInfo.txt and SymantecInfo.zip, which is simply SymantecInfo.txt in a zip archive). Quit the Terminal application. (See below.)
The LiveUpdate log file will be enclosed in the zip file, which you can post here.
Indeed, it doesn't appear to be an issue with your Norton product but rather internet service. Try selecting "automatic proxy configuration" in those settings, see if things change for you.
Well I think the problem is with my WiFi actually. I am hot spotting through an iPad Pro with the latest updates and I even reset it. It might be an issue with the service provider. Anyway I hot spotted to my cell phone (different service provider) and I was able to LiveUpDate. Could be some weird bug with my Verizon Cell service on my iPad Pro that could be blocking the LiveUpdate.
Thanks but that solution didn't work either. LiveUpdate continues to reply with 'LiveUpdate Cannot Connect'. I wonder if it had something to do with my proxies so I added live update.symantec.com and live update.symantecliveupdate.com to my Wi-Fi proxies.... didn't work either:
I am using Norton Security 7.5 and am the Admin. So I followed SoulAsylum steps and it didn't correct. When using Norton LiveUpdate it states 'An update error occurred' and sometimes it states 'LiveUpdate cannot connect'. I run the diagnostic and it states 'Your internet connection appears to be working correctly' (If it didn't I couldn't be typing this here).
Craig the question coming to mind is what version of Norton are you installing? Make sure you are using an account that is Admin on the computer. Here is the compatibility list.
