How long does it "hang" for when insatlling? Sometimes it does take a long tame to decompress etc.

Have you tried uninstalling Symantec Live Update in Add/Remove programs, then reinstalling an up to date version, your version may have become corrupted?   Link

You should't have to go to all the trouble of downloading updates from the Symantec website, it defeats the purpose of Live Update, and I would continue to troubleshoot until you resolve this issue with your Live Update.

All the best.

<< But it hang when it was "installing Symantec Security Software (1 of 1), finished decompressing". >>

I had something that may have been the same thing the other day when I ran LUALL manually to see if the FF3 fix was coming down for me and followed it by the normal Liveupdate from the command on the NIS Home page.

I closed that LiveUpdate session and ran it again and it came back that I was fully uptodate.

Did you try that repeat operation?

Hi johna

How long does it "hang" for when insatlling? Sometimes it does take a long tame to decompress etc.

I waited 20 minutes before giving up. There was nothing in the display that indicates it is still running. My previous experience with LiveUpdate on NIS2007 is fast, so I'm inclined to think this LiveUpdate on NIS2008 hung.

I bought this box copy of NIS2008 in April 2008. The LiveUpdate version installed in my computer from this box version is 3.4.0.162. The download link is for version 3.0. I think I have a later version and am unsure if I should go for an earlier version.

I love NIS2007, it never gave me any trouble on my dialup. This NIS2008 seems to be a lot more problematic. What else you think I should do to troubleshoot? If there is nothing else I can do, it may looks like I have to give up NIS2008. What other firewall/anti-virus product do you think is worth trying?

Thanks.

Hi huwyngr

Yes, I repeated that many times, each time it "hung" on me and terminates my internet connection.

What is it really doing at this stage "Installing Symantec Security Software (1 of 1), finished decompressing"??

Is LiveUpdate installing something or still downloading updates? (It shouldn't be still downloading as the earlier messages said "download complete")

Why does LiveUpdate terminates my internet connection?

If it terminates my internet connection, it means it no longer needs to download from Symantec. In the first place, LiveUpdate shouldn't be "messing" with my internet connection.

One possibility is that it did not hang at "Installing Symantec Security Software (1 of 1), finished decompressing" but is still downloading from Symantec (although my terminated internet connection would defeats this theory). And it takes time to download as the internet connection is a 50k dialup. In this event, the LiveUpdate interface is not helpful at all as it displays nothing to indicate it is still running/doing something.

Microsoft's Window Update has a better design. It downloads in the background in the system tray. It may takes several hours to download a big file on the dialup but I know it is still running because I can monitor the progress by looking at the percentage completed (the display/tool tip would read 10% complete, 33% complete, 78% complete and so on). I never have to think Windows Update hung as I can monitor the progress.

In the event that this issue cannot be solved, can someone recommend a different firewall/anti-virus product??

What am I suppose to do now? The "Updates Available" keeps popping up, when I run LiveUpdate, it hung and terminates my internet connection, I have to restart my computer each time. I need help please. Thanks.

OK -- just wanted to check that point.

Since there are a lot of NIS2008 users out there and here who don't seem to have that problem perhaps the best thing is to see what one of the Norton Staffers has to say. As you can see from the "red names" here they are active and extremely helpful.

So hang in there!

I would first recommend contacting our Customer Support team through the product’s Help & Support link. Or you can visit the below site to contact our free Customer Support:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

If you have already done this and they could not resolve your issue, please let us know. If this is the case, please provide as many details as possible. Thanks!

The version on the link I gave you for Live Update is the download for the most current version, 3.4.1.234, I just downloaded it myself to make sure.

I would go ahead and uninstall your old version of Live Update in Add/Remove programs and install this one. I had troubles connecting to Live Update once and this fixed the problem.

Cheers

ps Be sure and let us know how you get on, good luck.

Thanks johna, huwyngr and Tony for the assistance.

johna:

You were right. The link is for version 3.4.1.234. I look at the web page and it had this "Document ID: 2006032013262013, ....
Product(s): LiveUpdate 3.0" so I thought it was for version 3.0.

I uninstalled my original version 3.4.0.162 and installed this current version of 3.4.1.234.

I then run "luall" from the run command.

Results: LiveUpdate appears to hang at the stage "Installing Symantec Security Software (1 of 1), finished decompressing". In addition, LiveUpdate will terminate my internet connection at this stage.

I will try this one more time just to be sure LiveUpdate is not running.

If that doesn't work, I will contact the Symantec Customer Support team for help.

If Symantec Customer Support still cannot fixed this, I hope Tony can fix it.

Keeping my fingers crossed, I will keep you posted here. Thanks.

You’ll find that Liveupdate is much more user friendly if you go to options, configure and choose interactive mode instead of express. Hope this helps.

Interactive Mode: Downloads "Critical" Updates; asks to Install a "Critical" Update that Requires a Re-boot.

Express Mode: Downloads and Installs all Updates; asks to Install an Update that Requires a Re-boot.

I would recommend that anyone who has Automatic LiveUpdate On, that they Set Automatic LiveUpdate to Run on Express Mode every-few-hours.

Is that options/configure available  in NIS2008? I'm afraid I can't find it. My NIS2008's options has the following:

Options
 - Norton Protection Centre
   - Security Status Alerts
 - Norton Internet Security
   - Live Update
     - How to stay updated
     - How to stay protected

I don't see a "confugure" option let alone "interactive" or "express". Under Options, I have either Norton Protection Centre or Norton Internet Security. If I choose Norton Internet Security, I have LiveUpdate but there is no option to set express or interactive.

More information to add:

    Vista Home Premium

     NIS2008 (retail box copy)

    50K Dialup internet connection

I purchased this NIS2008 from the store in April 2008. I had previously used NIS2007 without any LiveUpdate problems. This is the first time NIS2008 asked to do a LiveUpdate since installing NIS2008 in April 2008.

I noticed LiveUpdate for NIS2008 does not automatically opens the "Dialup internet connection" dialog box if there is no internet connection. As a result, if I clicked "yes" to the LiveUpdate, it will fail as there is no internet connection. If there is internet connection, it will download the updates and somehow "hang" at the installing/decompressing Symantec software stage. In addition to hanging, it will terminate my internet connection.

Comparing this to NIS2007, LiveUpdate for NIS2007 will automatically opens the "Dialup internet connection" dialog box if I clicked "yes" to LiveUpdate and there is no internet connection. It will then downloads and installs the updates. At the end of the install, it does nothing to my internet connection leaving it still connected to the internet.

** The Dialup internet connection dialog box is where I enter my user id and password of my ISP to connect to the internet.

Please help. Thanks.

You will probably find they will advise you to uninstall and reinstall the program, I remember you said it was working OK until just recently, so obviously something has become corrupted. I would say uninstall and reinstall your NIS product using the Norton Removal Tool SYMNRT, I think this should fix the issue.

Cheers

Edit: You can configure Live Update by going into Control Panel>Symantec Live Update>General. Check: "Interactive Mode". Next, you can go to the Update Cache tab and click on "Clear All Files From Cache". You may want to have a look at the "Automatic Live Update" tab as well, to configure how often you want LU to run automatically.

Importantly,  you should click the ISP tab, it will let you configure your Internet Connectios for using Live Update.

AHHA - I just had a look, under the ISP tab,  if you click "customised settings for live update" , you will be able to fully configure how you want LU to manage your Internet Connection, as you mentioned earlier. There is also a box which gives you the option to "Close Dial-Up After Completion" - uncheck it.

(Also, there is a box to check if you do not want LU to manage your dial up connection at all.)

I still think you may have to reinstall to get rid of the "hanging problem". I had that problem about 2 years ago, and they told me to reinstall NIS, and it fixed the whole LU problem. I would just go ahead and try this, I think it should fix the problem.

Thanks again, johna.

This is very helpful. Control Panel>Symantec Live Update>General. I wasn't looking at Control Panel and could not find where to set interactive mode. I set it to interactive mode and ran LiveUpdate again. It hung at "Installing update for Symantec Security Software". I had it run for 10 minutes. I'm running a core duo (2 CPU) computer, I don't think it should take more than 5 minutes to install 2MB of software update.

That's good observations for the ISP tab. I don't think the "Close Dial-Up After Completion" check box is the cause of my terminated internet connection. I had use the default "Internet Options in the Control Panel" and I don't see any options to close my dial up using this option. Even if I had use the "Customised Settings for LiveUpdate" (which I did not use), it still shouldn't terminate my internet connection as the default for "Close Dial-Up After Completion" is unchecked.

About this terminated internet connection, LiveUpdate terminated my internet connection after 4 minutes at the "Installing update for Symantec Security Software" stage. That is when installing Symantec Security Software, LiveUpdate did not terminate my internet connection immediately, it does so after 4 minutes.

This is annoying as I need to restart my computer each time the internet connection is terminated. (I tried reconnecting again but it won't work) One thing new about Vista, it had this "local" connection which I don't know what it is. When LiveUpdate terminate my internet connection, LiveUpdate actually reduced my network connection to local. My normal network connection should be "Local and Internet".

PC  ----------->  Dialup --------------->  Internet

          local                     internet

      connection              connection

Good idea. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling NIS2008. Is this link the Norton Removal Tool SYMNRT?

Question: What is the difference between SYMNRT and the uninstall method from Control Panel? Can I just uninstall NIS2008 from Control Panel?

Thanks.

If you use the Norton Removal Tool, it gets rid of every trace of Norton including registry entries. Uninstalling via the control panel leaves these behind and so when you re-install, the entries could be the cause of corruption. You are more likely to have success if you use the Norton removal tool.

Yes, that is the correct link twentyjournal, go ahead and run it then reinstall your NIS program.

You could just un-installed then re-install LiveUpdate.

If you read back through this thread you will see he has already done this.

I know; I was just re-suggesting it.

So, if this does not work, then how is using the N.R.T. going to help, i.e. how is un-Installing then re-Installing the Product going to Resolve this Issue? It might, but it is un-likely to because it is an Issue with LiveUpdate.

Message Edited by Floating_Red on 07-06-2008 01:38 PM

It will actually help because it is more than likely that it is the registry keys for Liveupdate that are corrupt and uninstalling and re-installing doesn't fix this. Using the NRT deletes these keys and starts from a blank slate as far as Norton is concerned. If it was just uninstalled, the registry entry would still be corrupt and so when it was re-installed, Liveupdate still wouldn't work.

Hence, it is essential that the NRT is used in this case.
