The Norton Internet Security 2005 installed on my mother's PC isn't connecting to the Symantec server. The virus protection is past and I'd really like to update it. Thus far, automatic live update turns on and apparently is contacting the server but it isn't updating the virus protection, then whenever I run liveupdate right from the program itself it attempts to connect to the server but fails and gives me a failure to connect message.
What could be causing liveupdate not to connect? Also, would I instead be able to download the latest virus protection update file from the Symantec site and install it on the PC myself to remedy this problem? Which virus definition file should I download to update the anti-virus program for a Norton Internet Security 2005? Thanks for any help you can provide.
The best way to solve the problem on your mother's comptuer would be to upgrade to NIS 2010. Users of Norton 2006 or later can upgrade to NIS 2010 for free; since you have got NIS 2005, you will have to purchase NIS 2010; you can either buy it from a retail store or from a reputable online store, e.g. amazon.com, or from the online Symantec Store (USA) at the link below:
If you decide to purchase and install NIS 2010, please ensure that you have the minimum system requirements required for running NIS 2010; to check the minimum system requirements, please go to the link above and to "System Requirements".
NIS 2005 is very old and the thread landscape has changed massively; it is strongly recommended to therefore have the latest version of security software on your machine to deal with today's threats.

I just called Symantec of a similiar error with Norton Interent Security 2010 and the tech guys told me they were "upgrading the Symantec server". Therefore, the computer cannot connect to the servers to pull the updates. Maybe try again after about four hours and report back?
And seeing that you have NIS2005, I would recommend you to upgrade to NIS2010. Look around the (safe) online stores and local computer stores near you to find the cheepest option. I DO NOT recommend you to blindly trust Symantec and buy from their online stores as they tend to be more expensive...
Let us know which operating system you are using, and the exact error message you are getting when you run LiveUpdate. If you use Windows 2000/98/ME, you won't be able to install Norton 2010 product even if you purchase it.
If you are getting "lu1814" error, try the solution from the following Symantec Article:

And with NIS06 onwards, you can upgrade to the latest version for FREE...
The OP has a 2005 product, therefore can not update for free. If you can still edit your post, you should remove the part that says he can update for free.
I already indicated that since the OP has got a Norton 2005 product and not a Norton 2006 product or later, the OP will have to purchase the latest Norton 2010 product

LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the catalog file of available Symantec product and component updates. Please verify that you are able to connect to the Internet and run LiveUpdate again.
Anyhow, I tried the first solution but it did not work. I'm going to try the manual install of the definitions and see if it works.
The OS running on this PC is Windows XP. Have any other Win XP users experienced this same problem lately?
This problem has existed since I tried LiveUpdate as early as last week. Funny thing, the automatic version comes on, appears to connect to the server and (viewing the program's progress via task manager) appears to be doing something for at least twenty minutes or so before it shuts off. But, when I use the LiveUpdate directly from the NIS 2005 interface it , after about a couple of seconds of trying it abruptly ceases and gives me the error message.

If your system is XP, you probably are running sufficient resources to use NIS2010.
Please don't ignore the advice being offered. The nature of malware (which includes a lot more than what was once "viruses") has changed so radically that NIS2005 is almost useless for your computer.
There are so many cheap offerings out there of NIS2010, you really should get it. You could look for NIS2009 and maybe get it even cheaper.
Once you get infected by one of these new malware, you will wish you had the protection the current products offer.
Trust me, I'm listening to all advice gathered here. Anyhow, Intelligent Updater DID update the virus defitions successfully but LiveUpdate not connecting still doesn't sit well. I'll convince my mother to purchase NIS 2010 since I know the frustration of infected computers first hand. A couple of years back we had networked computers that got infected by an awful virus. At the time we were using that cheap AVG software that did work on basic viruses but failed to protect against the infection. We ended up getting a cleaner program and had to scrub both hard drives of the virus. Since then, those two old PC never were the same.
Anyways, thanks a lot for your help. If I had to update the virus definitions again, where could I find the next Intelligent Updater?? The one linked wasn't displayed on the main Intelligent Updater page.
You can use the same link, the exe file which you downloaded for Norton 2005 will get updated on daily basis. If you want to continue using the Intelligent Updater, you can try downloading it once in every 3 days to update the definitions.
Well. it has been a couple weeks now and LiveUpdate STILL cannot connect to the server. Also, now the intelligent updater file link I used before apparently does not exist so that makes updating the anti virus protection impossible. So, if I used the Norton Update Center on this site would it update the protection? Would a reason why Live Update is not connecting to the server because Norton has stopped support for NIS 2005?? I checked for security updates and there seems to be one for NIS 2005 but it tells me to use Live Update to download the updates, which I CANNOT do. Until I can get my mother to upgrade to NIS 2010, I’d really like to still be able to update the current NIS 2005 until that time comes. Anymore helpful hints guys? Is it possible there is some sort of infected file on the computer itself blocking Live Update from connecting??
It is possible that there is malware that is preventing you from updating that program. As has already been mentioned, there is so much malware out there now and the old 2005 product really can't cut it. I have seen other threads where the poster says they can't connect to the server, then they upgrade their program and they can connect again. Does the computer have any other problems connecting to any security sites?
As an answer to the above question, the PC doesn't seem to have any trouble connecting to other security sites.
Now the strangest thing happened. When accessing my mother's PC profile (our PC has multiple profiles for different users) I noticed the anti-virus definitions had recently been updated, long after I did it. I then tried LiveUpdate on that profile and it connected to the server without a problem.
So, from what I can gather, Windows was blocking my profile's access to the symantec server for some reason. Speaking of that, I usually can never use Internet Explorer on my profile either. Is it common for Windows to block certain programs on other profiles?
Anyhow, I guess the problem has been solved. I'm still going to do a system scan and an upgrade to NIS 2010 is definitely to come in the recent future. Thanks again to all of you who provided assistance.

No, Windows doesn't do that. But viruses do. Some malware comes in at the "user' level rather than the "all user" or "system" levels. That means that the user who contracted the virus will show the symptoms but the other users will be symptom free ... until and unless the virus finds a way to cross over.
It is malware behavior to block or redirect certain traffic, particularly that related to your security program and to you internet access.
I don't know what kind of favor you're trying to do for your mother by not getting her a relatively cheap update (I bought one for $10 after rebate at Staples four days ago); but it's no favor for her to end up paying a $100 to get a computer saved from a serioud malware attack ... if it can be saved at all.
Windows can block certain programs in a user's profile for various reasons. The profile can become corrupt (usually the registry entries for that profile become corrupted due to improper shutdowns / start ups; you can try fixing the WMI database to see if that corrects the problem [more on this later]) or the security settings in the user profile can be changed due to an improper uninstall of some software.
In IE, try resetting the program to defaults. Since I'm not sure what version of IE you have, you can search in the Help for IE to find hold to set the broswer to defaults. To reset the WMI database on the computer (this will try and help fix the errors with your profile not running certain programs)
Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE and press ENTER.
In the command prompt window, type this command and press Enter:
net stop winmgmt
Using Windows Explorer, rename the folder %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository. (For example, %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository_bad). %windir% represents the path to the Windows directory, which is typically C:\Windows.
Switch to Command Prompt window, and type the following and press ENTER after each line:
