Hi Matt,

I'm running 32bit.

Tried your advice, although there wasn't much to disable as I'd already disabled non Microsoft stuff through services management.

Anyhow problems are still there.  As stated before if I try to open NIS window then uistub kicks in but the window does not show.  After some time the support window pops with a UAC prompt and I open it.  The window displays details "Module 8504" and "Error ID 4" , which I've googled without luck.

I'm hoping you've some inspiration to share.

Cheers

I have NIS2009 installed on desktop PC and notebook.  Both are Vista Ultimate.  Here's the thing, NIS works perfectly on the notebook, but automatic updates will not work on the desktop.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times, and used NRT, all to no avail.

On the PC it takes forever to open the main window, on the notebook it opens instantly.  When I do manage to get it open it could be to 10 minutes after I clicked the shortcut or tray icon.  Sometimes it wont open at all.  I did notice that trying to open the main window would launch uistub.exe, but it just seems to freeze and shows 0 cpu usage in task manager.  You cannot kill this process so you can try again.

I have had 2 remote desktop assistance sessions with no result.  The CPU window in NIS shows liveupdate as NEVER run, and I've had to update manually by downloading definitions. I came back to Norton after using another suite which had no problems on either machine.  If it wasn't working so well on the notebook I'd have given up and switched back by now.

If anyone has solved this type of problem I'd really appreciate some advice.

Hi Hax,

Looks like we've having the same problem of trying to get Liveupdate to update automatically for us. I have a thread over here : http://norton.lithium.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=9293

Maybe there are some ideas there that you can use ?

 Cheers bro.

Thanks jamok,

Read that thread earlier today, similar problem, but I cannot even get NIS window open to do a manual update, or start liveupdate through programs menu.  The last 3 days I've been downloading and using intelligent updater for manual updates.  I was suspecting my router firewall, but checked that OK and the notebook is plugged into the same router.

Still ploughing through my system trying find something, if I get lucky I'll post on your thread too.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that you can't even open the main window.

I've been doing the same thing as you; downloading the 25MB++ intelligent updater and run it. Weird thing is, after it updates the NIS, updates begin to happen normally. But after a while, it goes back to sqaure one. As of now, my problematic machine is still stuck with an update almost 18 hours ago when my non problematic one is updating to the dot.

And both machines are on the same home network now ..... Weird huh ?

Good luck to you too bro :-)

Click Start> All Programs> Accessories> Run> In the Run dialogue box, type services.msc and click Ok.

This will open the services window.

In the services window, check for Norton Internet Security under the Name column, Status should be Started and Startup Type should be Automatic.

If it is not, please change it to Started and Automatic.

Now try to open the Norton product and check.

Hello Vineeth,

Already done that, service is running fine.  NIS appears to be running fine as well in the background, I just cannot get the window to open, or automatic updates to run.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Matt,

I started my system from cold this morning, and if I act quickly at login I can open the NIS window, and click on liveupdate and it will update ONCE!

I left the window open and monitored the status as I continued searching for a solution.  I noticed the last update was out to 17 minutes, so I decided to click liveupdate again the liveupdate dialog displays the following:

Norton Liveupdate is in progress....

Item                                         Status

Check for updates                  Pending

Download updates                 Pending

Process updates                    Pending

What I suspect is that initially everything is working fine at cold start, and I can do a manual update using liveupdate.  Then after leaving NIS on its own pulse update tries to phone home, and this is when everything stalls.  After this all the problems mentioned previously are evident.  This appears to be pointing to some issue with the pulse updates, I'll try turning them off to see what happens.

Back soon.

Just downloaded and executed the latest version of the intelligent updater (20080926-025-v5i32.exe). Pulse update was working like magic after this. However, after 20 minutes, i rebooted my machine and guess what ? Pulse update wasn't updating anymore.

Hax,

Do you have itunes or photoshop CS3 installed on your machine ? I found out that there's a program by the name of Bonjour (mDNSresponder.exe) which ties itself to NIS. Here's the link to remove it if you see it :

http://www.brunotavares.com/2007/08/01/resources/mdnsresponderexe-what-a-hell-is-that-2/

Cheers !

Jamok,

Thanks for the tip I'll try the latest intelligent updater.  BTW switching off pulse updates had no effect and I still cannot open the NIS window except maybe once at startup.  Then I can do one manual update from the NIS window.

I don't have itunes or CS3 installed, but I did a search anyway and no result.  Most of my software is for business or development, it is mainly a dev machine.

Still no solution from Symantec, I'm just about ready to pack it in and request a refund.

Hope it works out for you though.

Cheers.

Hax,

Looks like we've hit a dead end again bro. My NIS was updating normally after the intelligent updater and then it went dead. Did i mention that i had uninstall and reinstall it again today ?

And for the past 4 hours i've been dealing with a trojan attack (Trojan.DNSChanger) which somehow managed to disable my NIS (it didn't appear on my system tray each time i reboot), prevented NIS from updating and created a hell of a havoc until i was tempted to reformat the machine. But based on other forums recommendation, i downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware and managed to killed those nasty buggers. Now my NIS is up and running and i'm crossing my fingers it will last this time around. Read here : http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5398

You might want to download and try scanning your PC with it; it's free for the basic version which managed to remove the infections on my machine : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Hope everything turns out alright for you bro .... And it's the weekend; those Symantec guys are probably working overtime to solve your situation :-)

 Cheers !

jamok,

I think your right, time and a half or double time?  :smileyvery-happy:

Good thing is I don't appear to have dnschanger.

I've got NIS open at the moment, now showing 2 hours since last update. I used intelligent updater.

I'll let you know if I burn NIS.

catchya.

Just in case this happens again; may want to try to make sure Malwarebytes got it all: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-011811-1222-99&tabid=3

On SUMMARY tab: Note: Virus definitions dated prior to January 19, 2007 may detect this threat as Trojan.Dnschanger.

Hax,

I would like to think that they are working double time but chances are they could be taking a chill pill since it's the weekend :-)

Glad to hear that your machine is free from those pesky buggers and also updating nicely ....

My NIS hasn't updated itself for the past hour; my current virus definition is at 20080926.038 while the intelligent updater's version is at 20080927.002. Am gonna leave the machine on overnight and crossing my fingers the updates will take place.

Red,

Am not taking chances of that problem anymore. Read the article and so far, malwarebytes has took care of that problem for me quite nicely. But it's kinda weird cos NIS didn't pick it up and eventually was prevented from starting up.

Hi hax,

I've sent you a PM with some information. One quick question - as this is a dev box, can you confirm whether you have any debugging applications (like DebugView, for instance, or a different version of VisualStudio perhaps) running on the desktop that might not  be running on the laptop?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi jamock,

Is NIS updating properly now? I'm concerned with the last report that indicated that def's were a day out. If they are, can you get the latest IU, then reboot in safe mode and do a full scan?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Just saw this post from you.

What's happening now is i download IU every nite at around 11pm (GMT +8) and update NIS. Cos, each time when i push the "Run Liveupdate" button, it will either say that i have the latest protection updates (when the last update is 15 hours ago) or error in connection.

After running the IU, Pulse Update will run normally all the way up to 7.30am (GMT +8). That's when it stops updating automatically. Pulse Update status in the CPU Usage window says "Complete". Definition Updates in main window says "1 hour ago". And as of 10.15am (GMT +8), my problematic laptop shows virus definition version "20081007.003" while my work laptop shows "20081007.022" (and i didn't had to do anything for it; just connect to the Net and it updates itself).

 Thanks.

Great detail, jamok. Can you tell us if you are using a router, and if so, what is the make/model and firmware? I'm guessing that you may not have checked for DNS poisoning - a quick test would be to ping liveupdate.symantec.com (or liveupdate.liveupdatesymantec.com or update.symantec.com).

Many thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I'm using a Belkin ADSL2+ Modem with Wireless Router 802.11g Router; make F5D7632ak4A; firmware version 6.01.07.

I've also pinged all 3 sites given, and all came back with replies.

Also, i've observed for the past 2 days, the updates won't happen when the virus definitions changes versions ie i'm having version 20081008.003 and Symantec issues version 20081008.028. Liveupdate will stop updating and when i do it manually, LU will say that i have the latest protection updates.

 Thanks.
