Liveupdate not working. Main window slow to open

Just a little update for today.

LU stopped working 2 hours ago and since there is still no solution for this issue, decided to take things into my own hands.

Turned off the "Smart Firewall" and then i clicked on "Run Liveupdate". Lo and behold, it started to download a 31MB update file for my NIS 2009.

And now, everything is working once again.

So, is there something in "Smart Firewall" that i can tinker to get NIS 2009 to update properly ?

The firewall monitors all outgoing and incoming traffic. Not Norton itself but all other programs. What you did must have been a coincidence.

Hi D-Man,

Yeah, i realised that. But i suppose one of the programs must have prevented LU from updating ?

It's weird cos the updates will stop working when the version of the virus definitions changes. And when that happens, manual LU will always say that i have the latest protection updates even when the last updates happened 15 hours ago.

Just before i turned off the firewall, the last update from Norton was 2 hours ago, virus definition changed from 20081009.003 to 20081009.024 and 2 times of manual LU gave me a thumbs up for having the latest protection updates and therefore no updates are necessary.

 Weird huh ?

Hello hax,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems with the desktop installation. It seems likely that there is a conflict with some other application that is causing the problem. Check to ensure that Windows Defender is disabled, as their real-time component may be conflicting with Norton's. If that doesn't yield any good results, it may be best to clean boot and test again:

1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility.

Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).

3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".

4. Restart the computer and test the issue in Clean Boot.

Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK".

If the issue persists, please post back here with confirmation that whether you are on Vista 32-bit or 64-bit, along with any details from the testing.

Thanks,

Matt
