LIveUpdate option

Hello! The problem is this: I have disabled LiveUpdate, but the updating process is up & running every 5 to 10 minutes. Why? Is there any other option to just kill that automatic process? Thanks!

Any possibility the updates being run are Pulse Updates?  There is an option to turn them off also.

.

It may be better to turn off Pulse Updates and leave Automatic Liveupdates on, this way you will receive everything thru live update eventually.

Hi NewN1SUser,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

What Norton product do you have? It is Norton Internet Security (NIS)? What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

There are two types of updates NIS uses as mentioned by Yank.

Live Update - runs every few hours or so and includes new definition updates as well as program updates.

Pulse Update - run approx. every 10 minutes and updates definitions only. This keeps your virus definitions and other definitions the most up to date and is a very good feature. Pulse updates also take a very short time since it includes definitions only and not the larger program updates.

Are you paying per MB charges from your ISP when your computer is actively connected? If you are paying a flat rate from your ISP it is best to leave both Live Update and Pulse Updates turned on for the best up to the minute protection.

If you pay per MB or really do not want Norton connecting this often, you can disable Pulse Updates. But I would highly recommend leaving Live Update turned ON. With pulse updates disabled and Live Update on, your definitions would at least get updated every few hours. However, definition updates are quite small and should not affect your online usage noticeably.

If you turn off both Live Update and Pulse updates, you will not get any definition or program updates unless you run Live Update manually. This could leave your computer more vulnerable to online threats.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Well, the problem seems to be a sort of a glitch in Settings window. Yesterday I activated the product after a week of inactivity (vacation, yeah!), but the activation process took place after the activation period expired. After NIS was ready to rumble again, there was a small flow of packets every 5-10 minutes. I’m careful with internet traffic and I initiate manually every connection (even with Google Chrome, which I explicitly allow it to connect when it ask to). So that was a big problem. I said: wait a minute, what the hack is going on here? What program do this? Scanning, disconnecting from ISP (a few times), restarting, scan again. Nothing! Not using automatic updates with any program and knowing (and verifying) that LiveUpdate and Pulse Updates were deactivated (I never used automatic stuff in test period) and finding what is the problem, I wrote to this forum. So, the problem was (is?) this: after NIS started to work again (I guess it doesn’t like mondays) the Pulse Updates were executed like its associated setting option not only was active, but enabled too. Which was not the case, it was disabled and deactivated (when LiveUpdate is disabled that option can’t be accessed). Well, it doesn’t seems to be a big problem or a problem at all, but what if there are some other settings which are treated like this one mentioned above? I hope so not. Anyway, I did a reset for every section in Settings window just in case. So, that’s all, folks! Thanks for watching! yank, thanks for your response. Allen, that was a nice elaborated answer. P.S. You mentioned Pulse Updates. I don’t see this term in translated GUI I have for NIS. That’s why I ask: is there any place where I can download the english manual? Not the user guide but the actual manual (help file)? Or, even better, is there a way to just dynamically change the interface language? Thanks again

HI NewN1SUser,

Thanks for the update. If you have Pulse updates and Live updates disabled, then no updates will be downloaded to your computer.

There are a few other things that require NIS to occasionally access the Internet but not on a routine basis. This could include sending of anti-span statistics (Network Settings > Email Protection) and Community Watch (Misc. settings) and a couple of others.

The full user guide (the only one I know about) can be found at the following location:

On a side note, I noticed that your post is strung together into a single paragraph. I think this is being caused by active scripting being disabled in IE options.

Do you have fhe following toolbar when you are typing a post? If not, I can give you information on how to configure an IE option to allow you a more fulfilling and fully featured Norton Community.

HI Bjm_

I just tested Firefox and did not have to change anything for it to work correctly and present the toolbar. Firefox is not my every day browser as I use it mainly for testing for my website but I don't recall changing anything and it looks like it is working correctly in the Norton forums.

Are you saying you have to change something each time when you visit the Norton Community? If this is true you might want to post something in Forum Feedback because I am sure it can be solved.

I addressed IE since that is the one I am familiar with the most. If the OP uses Firefox then it can be solved there as well. :smileywink:

Best wishes.

Hi, Allen

Yes, this could be the cause. Though... I saw the time interval (LiveUpdate activity interval on main window) modification. (A little bit too late actually).

Anyway, now everything works like I told it to work.

Thank you!

@ bjm_: Yup! FF & NoScript. He-he!

Thanks!

LE: Allen, yes, the user must allow the script from lithium.com for the toolbar you are talking to appear on page. This could be blocked with NoScript plug-in.

Hello AllenM

My FF setup is as I prefer...I keep NoScript (as well as FF) on a short rope...only a few entries on NoScript Whitelist....

Just recall when Community had update/upgrade not to long ago...I lost toolbar and was easy to see Lithium was not "allowed".  Not an issue that needs to be fixed.  I just like a tight browser...heck, I Forbid Norton and Symantec here unless I need Symantec to render it's toolbar.  I run FF with Java and Flash and other plug-ins "disabled" as plug-ins can be toggled on the fly.  As well as scripts on the fly via NoScript...then I wrap it all up in my Sandboxie.

Was just an observation following your astute perceptive reasoning about active scripting...

Hope my $.02 was not a no no

Hi bjm_,

No of course your thoughts are not a no no. Absolutely you should always be ready to share your insight. I guess I just went into troubleshooting mode, thinking that you might have been having problems getting the forum to display properly without manually tweaking something each time. Knowing that you do it this way on purpose obviously means you don't have a problem with it. :smileywink:

Best wishes.

HI NewN1SUser,

Thanks for the update and I'm happy that things are working as you want them now.

One added thing I forgot to mention before is that if you click on HIstory from the main NIS window you can see the Recent Activities and should see indications there as to why NIS accessed the Internet if indeed it did.

You'll notice in the drop down box in the History window that you can also select categories of interest and then on the right hand side of the window you can enter manual search terms to help find things of interest.

HIstory actually has a lot of useful information there.

If you consider your questions answered to your satisfaction please mark this thread by clicking the Accept as solution button on the post which you believe contained the solution. This will allow others to know the problem is solved and quickly get to the solution when they search the forums.
