I'm having the same issue running NIS 2009 on windows vista 32 bit and error code. 8921, 229. I contacted support but they clearly didn't know what to do. He connected to me remotely and started some updates. One time a 29 mb file was downloaded, but failed to complete, the other time everything was up to date. And finally a few updates were downloaded but could not complete. Afther a while he told me this was a known!!! problem and a patch was being worked on. This was happening because the program is just a few weeks released. According to the technician I was save from virusses. How strange??!! It didn't update in 24 hours. In the meanwhile I got mail with a virus in it which norton has always detected. But since the update problems started it just got through.

I told the technician about this and he viewed the results from virustotal.com about the file, so there was no way around it was a downloader. The funny thing is that on virustotal.com the file is detected by symantec as a downloader!!! I also told him I had safely quarantine the file with nis and since it was within a zip file which I never have openend and since I have scanned the pc with a few other scanners I know I'm not infected.

He wasn't reading what I was saying and connected me through to virus removal. I told the exact same story and the guy was just copy pasting whole advertisements at my screen about how great norton virus removal technicians are and much more. He just didn't read a thing about what I was writing down. Finally they wanted me to charge with 99.99 dollar to remove a virus which I dont have. How absurd!!!! and not of any help at all

I then quickly ended the session and restarted the computer. Live update was working again. But today I got a message; Could not connect to norton live update server, with again the above error code. My computer has not updated in 16 hours and is according to my experiences not save from virusses. What is going on????

Get virus definition files from this web page.

Live Update of NIS 2009 and NAV 2009 are having too much problems if compare to the previous products.

Thanks for the replies -- glad to hear it's not just me.

Can Symantec please resolve this ASAP!

Do you have any other firewall products installed in your computer? If yes, please follow the steps in the document 8921,229

Hi.

I seem to be having problems with LU on both of my machines. I'm getting random updates failing on both (restored the system), these updates will then succeed, but ones that previously succeeded now fail.

Also, I sometimes get an error connecting to LU when it tries to check for updates. It says:

"Unable to connect to the Norton LiveUpdate sever. Please check your Internet Connection."

The internet connection is fine, and this is intermittently happening on both my machines. If I click "More Info" next to this error I get error number 8921, 229.

I would contact support, but when I did this before and made the mistake of allowing the tech to remote control the PC, it was clear he had no idea what he was doing (this was a different problem on the one machine), so I terminated it and reinstalled the product.

Any help would be great.

Thanks for the reply, but this is clearly a Symantec problem. I'm using NIS09, no other firewalls - and this only happens intermittently. Sometimes fails to connect at all, and other times fails to install the updates it's downloaded.

I have also no other firewalls or security products installed.

Another thing happened. After a few restarts it updated properly, but later after an update nothing changed with the time interval. It updated and still said last update 17 hours ago.

I'm guessing that this happens because with this new update strategy, suddenly the update site is being hit with thousands (millions?) of update requests every 5 minutes of so.  An update can take anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes; and this may be proving too much for the servers.

But what I'm discovering is that if a particular update doesn't complete well, then one of the next ones will.  I think it's only when we push things by launching LU ourselves that we experience a slew of update failures.

At the moment, my update is current as of 3 minutes ago.  What about the rest of you?

Same here. I've also noticed the GUI is not reflecting the update status.

In my case, it said last update 14 days ago (which was correct -- restored PC), then it failed to update. Then it succeeded, update said 1 second ago, but still at risk (probably because I need to run a quick scan, but pressing Fix does absolutely nothing. I then manually ran a quick scan, let it finish - status was still at risk. Red X in systray, left it for about 10 minutes, did absolutely nothing, came back, status now secure - green tick.

Manually run LU, can't connect.. same error code as before.

Everything seemed fine yesterday, but it's hopeless today.

for now its updating properly; 30 seconds ago.

If anyone would like to send me a log, I can take a look. This might help narrow down the problem.

After a LiveUpdate finishes with an error or other issue, make a note of the time, then make a copy of the log to a different location (to prevent the contents from being overwritten by later entries). The log should be at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Lue\Logs\Lue.Log (XP) or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Lue\Logs\Lue.Log (Vista).

Then send me a PM and I can tell you where to upload it.

I was having the same problem last night.  The error is being caused because the server is returning 405 errors during the LiveUpdate check.  See this post over over in the LiveUpdate failing thread and the response from Reese Anschultz saying that the problem should now be fixed…

I got the same on my computer. Must be the server for NIS that’s having this problem. :smileyhappy:

i downloaded one of the large virus defintions (about 75mb)

Did you downloaded the virus def from here: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

If yes, then the 75MB download size after the install of the previous is completely normal, as the two differs a bit.

Unfortunately, the Intelligent Updater has a large file to update every day thanks to all the bad people who continuously keep changing malware and Symantec's good effort in continously trying to keep up wth the malware writers.and the types of more sophisticated malware that keeps getting made and changed.
