LiveUpdate "Updating Error"

I installed the COMCAST Norton security suite a few days ago, and now I get a pop up window with the text:

     Updating error

There was an error performing the update.

The LiveUpdate log just shows a long list of installed products, each one with a green checkmark in the status column.

I opened LiveUpdate and clicked "Update Everything Now", it ran for a few minutes then an alert popped up:

     Microdefs error

LiveUpdate had an error updating the virus definitions.

I ran it a second time, and it worked, that is, the summary window came up with all green check  marks.  Then I clicked on Update Everything Now again, and it ran briefly, downloading 60K of NAV and the summary window came up with all green check marks, so it looks like everything is OK.

LiveUpdate version 5.2.3 (21)

MacOS 10.5.8 (Leopard)

MacBook Pro

2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4 GB RAM

29 GB free HDD space

The MacOS Firewall is turned on, set to block incoming connections except for a few apps I have listed, none of which are Norton security apps.

However, I am wondering, what's going on?  Any ideas?  Should I be concerned?

Me very nearly too.  Except I get an error that simply says "An error occurred. Please try again."   And the explanation is "An error occurred."

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Now, after about 3 weeks, it has stopped.  Sometimes, early, that is in the first week or so of use, I had to run the up manually a second or third time before it would complete with no errors, but now it seems to always work.

I will say that I am planning to upgrade my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard, probably wait a little on Lion, but I might go all the way to Lion.  It's possible that being a little behind in the version of MacOS that I am running caused my initial problems, and something might reoccur.  Good luck to you!

Hi MacUser4922,

Sorry for the delayed reply... ,

It seems that you come across with the live update issue, where the Live Update component version might be older. So, In order to make sure that we have the right one, Please visit this link from Mike_Romo,  who gave instructions on how to update the latest version.

Let me know, if you have any questions :smileywink:

So, I followed the instructions.  There was no file jl*.jar in my install.  So, the live update program started to work, which is good.  However, when I select update everything,  i now get the error:

The product registry folder could not be found.  Try re-installing your Symantec products.

There are two files in the symantec /lib/... directory - one called active registry and the other called new registry.

I'm running lion.

Thanks.

   Mike

Hi michaelFrom,

As you said that there was no file jl*.jar in my install.  And still "Update Everything" is giving you error and from your reply it is still unclear whether you installed the latest version of Live Update Component for your Norton Program in Mac.

Because, MikeRomo clearly mentioned that, if the file path "/Library/Application Support/Symantec/LiveUpdate" does not have the jar files, then you have to install the latest version of Live Update for Norton by following this below link.

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100414123129EN&ln=en_US

Incase, if that doesn't work - we have to run the removal tool for Norton and reinstall it.

Thanks for the help.  I repeated the install Mike Romo recommends, but it didn't resolve the issue.  First, this liveUpdate looks older, and second, the jars didn't show in the directory.  I followed your removal tool link, thank you, and deleted the internet security suite.  Then I reinstalled.  Everything is now good.

First, let me say that this was the absolute best reinstall experience I've had.  Everything installed and automatically registered.  Then it updated.  Very nice job, please pass along my appreciation to your packaging team.

Thanks for the help,

   Mike

Hi MichaelFrom,

I am sorry for the trouble it caused you :smileysad: , Mac team is currently looking on these bugs and I am sure they will be able to fix it.  However I am glad that the issue is fixed by remove and reinstalling the Norton :smileyhappy:
