LiveUpdate works irregularly

Hallo, I am on Win7Pro 32-bit with Norton Internet Security 2011. It worked fine for several months, including almost non-stop working LiveUpdate.. However in last 10 days I got two alert messages that my NIS definitions are not updated properly and system may be vulnerable. So I checked LiveUpdate status and it was written there Last update two days ago... Therefore I did Run LiveUpdate manually (pressing Run LiveUpdate button) and it worked fine again. However, I expect that it may happen also for the third time and further.

It shortly seems that LiveUpdate works fine for 99% of time, but sometime it stops work (doesn't checks for updates suddenly) and this has happend two times in last ten days. After Run Liveupdate button it works properly for a while. What may be problem in? Thank you.

Hi Allen, thank you for questions :-)

What version of NIS 2011 do you have from Support > About?

*** 18.5.0.125

During the period in which you indicate that Live Update is not working, do you see anything in History indicating an update failed or some other error? Click on History from the main NIS user interface, then select Live Update from the drop down list. During any gaps in live update do you see any errors listed?

*** No error in that list. However, up to December 22 (incl) there are several LiveUpdate sessions completed daily (and all automatic), but after December 22 there are only two: December 28 and Januar 2 and both are "Interactive". Meanwhile, some updating works now - e.g. just now there is "4 minutes ago" ...

What type of internet connection do you have? Is it dial-up or broadband?

*** It is "local" wifi provider, let's say it si broadband (not dial-up).

Does NIS show secure on everything from the main user interface window?

*** I don't understand this question, sorry. However, everytjing seems to be OK and "System status" is "secure".

Have you recently installed any other software? Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS?

*** No installations from beginning of problem period. No other security software besides NIS.

Hi Jaroh,

Thanks for the addtional information.

I would recommend to keep an eye on it and if the problem comes up again you should try uninstalling and reinstalling NIS.

You can download the English version of NIS 2011 from here. Please let us know if you need a different language. As a precaution you can make note of your product key from your Norton Account and back up Identity Safe through Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe > Backup Identity Safe Data.

Once you have downloaded NIS 2011 you should disconnect from the Internet and uninstall NIS via the control panel. Reboot and then install NIS 2011 again. Connect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

This process might bring you back to version 18.1.0.37 because your current version (18.5) is still being released in a phased manner and is not yet globally available.

I would only do this if you continue to have this problem. If you do have this problem again and reinstalling NIS does not resolve it, then we will need to go the more complete route of using the Norton Removal tool.

Please do let us know how it goes.

Best wishes and Happy New Year.

Allen

Thank you, Allen. Those are not good news ... Anyway, I am waiting a couple of more days if it "get back" to several LiveUpdates completed daily  and if not (what I suppose) then I will reinstall. However, it is interesting that "pulse" updating works well now, only that "main" updating (sorry for laic terms) doesn't... We'll see.

Allen, I have reinstalled NIS 2011 yesterday morning (cca 29 hours ago) according to your instruction (I choose saving of user data when uninstall). It seems it solved problem, both Automatic and Pulse Liveupdate work up to know.

It is interesting that even after several LiveUpdates I am still on version 18.1.0.37 (what is older version, I guess).

Thank you for your advice!

I will inform you if the problem will come again.

Hi Jaroh,

Thanks for the update. It is normal to still be at version 18.1.0.37. At some point before too long you will end up receiving version 18.5.0.125 via live update but that is not globally available just yet.

Best wishes and Happy New Year. :smileyhappy:
