Logmein Rescue

I suspected having a virus and got in contact with the support by chat on the website. The support person asked to access my computer by Logmein which I accepted. He didn´t find any virus.

Now I´m getting worried if it was the right thing to do since I have files on my computer that I don´t want someone to have access to. Can I trust all Norton support personal? Can they copy my files “behind the screen” that I see or did I see everything they did on my screen when I watched the personal handle my computer?

The short answer is really a question of whether or not you can trust anyone 100% of the time?

We have to put trust in something or someone, and in my mind, Norton is one entity I do trust.

If the remote session you witnessed did not show any file copying, you should be safe in knowing nothing was taken from your system.

Yes, I run Norton Power eraser and Malwarebytes, it didn´t find anything.

Why did you suspect a virus?

Usually those scans will clear your system, but if you still feel you have been infected, go to one of the sites listed in Dick's post above.

I really wouldn't worry about a Norton support tech, but if you would like to remove LogMeIn Rescue from your system, go to C:\Users\<insert your name here>\AppData\Local and delete the LogMeIn Rescue Applet folder.

Hello

Norton Power Eraser should not be run to check for malware. If you are going to run that tool at all, it should be after Norton found malware which it couldnn't clean up. Although some others say it's ok to run on your own, I STILL feel that it is not a tool one should run on their own. I still feel that the users who come here looking for help with a malware problem are not the experts who know how to distinguish the good file from one that has the same name, but is actually malware. Unless, you are expert enough to be able to distinguish the difference, then it shouldn't be run.  The users who are experienced enough to take care of malware on their own, most likely won't come to our Forum.

EDIT was to change 1 word.

Hi,

I agree with floplot, and I'd like to add the fact that NPE sometimes, if an infection is found, it does NOT remove the infection, but instead it deletes the whole file.

Under certain conditions, this could be a critical file, needed for Windows to boot, and users may be left with an unbootable system.

Regards,

A good 'second opinion' scanner to try would be Hitman Pro (http://www.surfright.nl/en).  The free version will detect malware but not remove anything (that's reserved for the paid version).

Hi L78,
If you contacted was a genuine Norton Support Personnel, then don't worry. He will most probably do only the steps to save you, not harm you.

When logmein rescue gives you access to a small exe program which initiates the remote processes. With your permission, this small .exe file automatically downloads to the remote PC.

Also note that once the remote session was closed, its never reopenable without from the step 1 to be reperformed.

Worrying about any trojan or backdoor being dropped into your system?

Those chances are very rare with this software and the company you are dealing with. If again in doubt, I suggest you may perform a Full system scan using MBAM and probably watchout for suspecious connections in firewall rules. Also trust matters a LOT!

Logmein rescue has features which helps user's at the client end to control what resources the support team or technicians are trying to get access to (atleast notify for granting permission)

LogMeIn is a legitimate company which employs 256-bit SSL encryption and adheres to the Safe Harbor Privacy Principles administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Once you disconnect from the connection it is no longer usable. The user has the ability to stop remote access or disconnect at any time.

It will also show a log  / history of that too. Did you find anything like that?

As far as I know, logmein is trustable for their services.
