True. :) But I'm not really wanting to write new rules. Just trying to understand where the loopback rules have gone. They should already exist. Or at least they have for the last few versions of NIS.

What is loop back/ loopback rules? What does that do/mean?

In essence, the loopback rules allow your computer to talk to itself (much like we sometimes do ourselves!). There are certain applications which you may have installed on your computer that require this capability, simply in order to function correctly.

Loopback cases are taken care of in the new network driver shipped with 09 product.  If you need specific control, you could still use General Rules (under Advanced Settings) to create your own loopback rules.

Thanks! I suspected it might be something like that.

What happened to the loopback rules in NIS 2009? I have 2 PCs running NIS 2009 and neither have any specific loopback rules listed anywhere, not even under the Advanced section. Strangely, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird seem to have very broad communication auto-generated rules that could serve loopback functionality (in addition to other connectivity too.) But, that said, other programs like IE and Opera have no loopback type listings at all. Yet they seem to work normally...

Possibly related?? I run Ad Muncher on both PCs. The presence of AM surely doesn't change any of this does it?

If you want more rules then go to the Advanced setting under Smart Firewall. Turn off Automatic Program Control and turn on Advanced Event Monitoring.
