Don't treat this as gospel but from something I think I've seen elsewhere recently perhaps this could happen when the scan reaches a compressed file (zip, rar etc) which contains within it more compressed files. The scan engine starts to uncompress the outer one and then has to compress more and more files nested within each other and it seems to freeze.

Something you could try is to turn of the command to check within compressed files since if you have AutoProtect ON they will be checked when you go to use them and uncompress them deliberately -- but at least then you will know what is going on!

Perhaps worth trying and reporting back. If that makes no difference definitely come back for other possibilities but this is an explanation I came across in the last day or so somewhere here in the Norton Forums.

This did not fix the problem.  It is continuing to increase in the files check, I am now up to +87,000 files before it locks up.

Anyone else?

Can you see what file it is hanging? You could try to exclude it from scanning
