Lost C drive space after NIS 2010 reinstall

This afternoon i removed NIS2010 using the Norton removal tool and deleted the remaining Norton folders in c\programdata that were still left behind. At this point i had 19.6GB left on my C drive.

I reinstalled NIS 2010 and updated 2 or 3 times including 2 reboots before NIS reported it was fully up to date-the program itself was/is working fine.

However i noticed later on that i had lost nearly 3GB of hard drive space (down to 15.6GB) and NIS was the only program i had installed today on my Vista 64 SP2 laptop.

I did the usual and checked hidden system files like system restore points but my system restore points had NOT increased at all and Ccleaner reports only 28mb of temp files to delete.

Examining some of the hidden NIS files in C\Programdata did show a NIS 17.0.0.136 folder 233mb in size in the Norton folder-is this the usual size?

I can only attribute this huge loss of drive space as something to do with norton as its the only program i have changed today-its also curious that when vista is in safe mode it reports space on c drive as 19.6GB (what it was earlier)-as NIS drivers etc. do not get loaded in safe mode could this indicate a problem?Help!

P.S. Having just written all the above i realise i might be mistaken as i had run a disc defrag on the drive as well and checking that program it reports that i had 19GB space before the defrag!?!

Does anybody know if defragging a hard drive can loose you space?

You shouldn't loose space in a defrag, try rebooting.

Here is a free tool you may be interested in, it's called TreeSize Free.

I use it quite often to see whats taking up so much space and I find it very helpful.

No adds, nags, or anything. Just a nice little free tool.

Hello Uglyspirit

Could Windows updates have taken up any space since they came out yesterday and perhaps they were loaded up automatically today? There were a lot of windows updates. Just offering this as a possibility.

Thanks all for reply.

Between writing my 1st post and this one my C drive space has reduced even more to 14.8gb!!! All i've done is uninstall the Auslogics disk defragger i was using.

As for restore points-yes i thought of this and no restore point has been created since this morning when i did 12 windows updates-after that my drive space was still 19.6gb.

Also that restore point is the only one i have at the moment.I have also tried running check-disc which reported no problems...As i stated before NIS has a folder in Program data which is 230mb plus just want to know if we all have that?

Have just run Treesize and the only thing that really stands out is 28.5Gb for windows vista of which 18.8GB is winsxs which i believe is some sort of backup of old dll/files etc..?

Ok i got my drive space back now!

It was the system restore point that was created just before windows update and possibly a combination of that and defragging the drive that caused this.

I never thought a single restore point would take up over 1 or 2 GB!

All i did was create a new restore point (that gained me 0.2gb ?!) and then was able to delete the windows update restore point and now i'm back to + 20gb.

Sorry to have gone off topic and sorry to have blamed NIS initially (although with PCs it does most of the time hold true to look at the last thing you changed/updated/installed as the cause sometimes.:smileyvery-happy::smileyvery-happy:smileyhappy:
