Lost CD drive when inserting Norton disc after uninstalling previous version

My 360 4.0 had expired, and I had purchased 360 5.0 to renew with.  I made the mistake of uninstalling the old version, and as soon as I inserted the disc, both my CD/DVD drives were disabled.  I ended up in the support chat, and had to download the software, since I couldn't load the CD.  After activating the 5.0, my CD/DVD drives worked normally again.

The exact same thing happened to my daughter, who uninstalled her Antivirus before trying to load the new one, and we thought the computer itself was the problem  She bought a new one, and I'm now trying to get the old computer working again.  I uninstalled the CD drive, and it seemed to reinstall when rebooting, but "my computer" still can't see the drive.

When I loaded 360 5.0 on my laptop, I didn't uninstall first, and it upgraded just fine.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?rvenin DeJong

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  It worked - nifty little program to keep on a flash drive just in case.

You're welcome.  Thanks for letting us know the fix worked successfully.

You're more than welcome!

What I'd really like to know, though, is why it happens in the first place.  It wasn't just the Norton 360, it also happened with Norton Antivirus, so it must be something on Norton's CD's.

According to this related article, it is a problem with a couple of registry keys that the Fix-it tool repairs.  Norton 360 uses GEAR software to author its direct backups to CD/DVD and problems can sometimes arise relating to the GEAR drivers.

Well, maybe I'm just being picky, but as a long-time user of Norton,  I would have thought that Symantec could have checked that out before releasing their discs.

Anyway, thanks for all your help!
