Mac Book Pro Not Being Monitored Online

A family of four, I want to monitor all of us.  I set it up on all of our Windows computers, works for all users, but my Mac does not seem to monitor any site.  MACOS 10.7.4.  I have tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on the Mac.

I tried monitoring admin accounts, child accounts, logged in as my son on my mac and still no monitoring.

I can configure it with the tray icon on the Mac.

Norton extensions are installed for Safari  (viewed installed Safari extensions : NortonSafetyMinderBF

Online I see the Mac, it looks like a valid device and sees all the users.

Just no logging is occuring.

I have been over and over the settings and it looks like all the norton settings are done correctly.

Any ideas?

Thank You

Rick

Hi Katie,

Still not working.

Safari is Version 6.0 (7536.25).  I went into preferences, extensions and "NortonSafetyMinderBF" is enabled.  Yet nothing is logged.

Chrome is Version 21.0.1180.89.  Where do I get the SafetyMinder Plugin in for Chrome?

Firefox is version 15.0.1.Where do I get the SafetyMinder Plugin in for Firefox?

Windows machines logging fine, I must be missing something with the MAC.

Any next steps or ideas?

Rick

Hi RickGadbois,

For Firefox, please click on the Tools item on the top menu bar, go to add-ons, then click on the extensions item on the left hand side of the screen. If it has a button next to the Norton Safety Minder saying enable, you need to click that.  If it says Disable, you need to click enable then restart Firefox.

What version of Norton Safety Minder is installed on the Mac?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

How do I determine the version of safety minder on my mac?  I installed it a few days ago if that helps.

The Extension in Firefox says 3.0.1r22.  Is this the version you are asking about?

I enabled the extension in firefox (it was disabled).  I will monitor to see if the looging starts online with family monitor.

Should Chrome and Safari work?

Hopefully we get this working, thank you...

Rick

Katie,

Using Firefox Online Family Help displays search results but not web activity.

Using Chrome or Safari and nothing is displayed by Online Family.

Extensions enabled, MAC OS 10.7.4.

Windows machines eem to be working fine.  The problem is these browsers in the MAC environment.

Is this a configuration issue?  I'd like to upgrade Norton, but want to make sure it actually works first.

Thanks again for your attention to this,

Rick

Hi RickGadbois,

You should be able to find Firefox version on the Mac at Firefox Browser -> Firefox on the menu Bar -> About Mozilla Firefox.

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

The problem is that on the MAC none of the web traffic is being monitored by Online Family.

The only exception is that "seacres" are being monitored via Firefox only (btw it is version 15.0.1)

If this helps here are all the versions

Firefox (15.0.1)

Chrome Version 21.0.1180.89

Safari Version 6.0 (7536.25)

MAC OS 10.7.4

Extensions are enabled.

Can you help me get this working?

RickGadbois,

What version of Norton Safety Minder is installed on the Mac?

The latest Norton Safety Minder for Mac supports Firefox 15.

It supports Safari 5.1, but Safari 6 isn't supported yet.

The program for Mac doesn't support Chrome.

Katie,

You asked "What version of Norton Safety Minder is installed on the Mac?"

  • I am not sure of the version but I did use live update to get the latest.  Is that the one I should be using?
  • There is no about dialog on the safety minder icon on the mac, how do I find the version?

Thank You,

Rick

So the issue I have open is:

  • Using Firefox V15 , Online Family shows searches but does not show web activity.  Any idea how this can be fixed?  Is it a known bug with Online Family?

Rick

RickGadbois,

For the version of Norton Safety Minder on Mac, please click the Norton QuickMenu icon -> Select Norton Safety Minder -> Edit Account, then you should see the version number on the screen.

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

Thank You - unfortunately we still have not solved the initial problem.

Using Firefox, searches are being displayed in Online Family, but web site traffic is not.

Is this a known problem?  Is there a fix?

  • The Norton Safety Minder Version is 3.0.1r22.
  • Firefox is version 15.0.1.
  • MACBook Pro OS is 10.7.4

Rick Gadbois

RickGadbois,

If you log onto the Mac as your child and visit a blocked website using Firefox, does it get blocked?

Thanks,

Katie

Yes, the blocking feature is working.  However, here is something interesting that may help us troubleshoot this issue.

  • When I turn blocking ON in Online Family, it blocked the site AND the site is listed in web traffic in Online Family.
  • When I turn blocking OFF (but keep web supervision on), the sites I visit are NOT listed in Online Family.

This failure condition only exists on the Mac/Firefox but not when using Windows.  In Windows it works.

So the problem of web traffic not being listed still exists.

Rick

RickGadbois,

Thanks for the information.  Now we can narrow down the issue a little bit.  You mentioned " I turn blocking OFF...".  Please let us know what option do you select "Give a warning but allow XXX on the site anyway" or "monitor only (All Web blocking turned off) at Settings -> Web?

Thanks,

Katie

Scenario One: "Web Supervision" turned on,  and the "Monitor only" radio button is selected.

In this scenario no web history is displayed (on Mac/Firefox) but works on Windows

Scenario Two: "Web Supervision" turned on, and the "Give a warning but allow XXX on the site" radio button is selected.

In this scenario web history IS displayed on the Mac!!  I just uncheck all the boxes in "Site Category" so no warnings are given while browsing.

So it looks like we have a workaround for this problem and have identified how the Mac/Firefox environment works differently than the Windows environment.  This is "good enough" for web monitoring for me, for now.

Thanks for the help and if you like, you can give me a free upgrade for the testing!!! :)

P.S.  I'd like to see support for the other browsers.  Also, I'll start trying out the other functionality as well.

Thanks again,

Rick

I am having a very similar issue and the stated fix the did not work for me.

This is what I have :

  • The Norton Safety Minder Version is 3.0.1r22.
  • Firefox is version 15.0.1.
  • MacMini OS is 10.7.4

None of the blocks are working on the firefox broswer and none of the firefox activities are reporting in the supervisor console.  I did check the the ensure that the SafteyMinder extension was correctly installed and enable in Friefox was it is.

Also, I do have Safari on this machine and the blocks are working correctly and the activites are report correctly as well.  Please help.

Hi RCJWILSON,

You mentioned that Safari works on the Mac, but Firefox 15 doesnt....What version of Safari do you have on the Mac?

Thanks,

Katie
