I have a MacBook Pro 16" 2019 and Norton 360 Premium (8.6). As I upgraded to Big Sur (Mac OS 11.0.1) a couple of days ago, Norton started to behave very nasty. It started to block wanted traffic, almost all traffic. My mail programme (Proton Bridge) is not able to connect to the Internet, Safari Browser is blocked as well, I am not able to backup my Computer with Time Machine to my NAS (Synology).
Solution: I have to deactivate Norton's firewall but now very regularly annoying messages from Norton show up that my computer is not protected. I tried deinstalling Norton and install it again. Unfortunately no success. Anyone has a solution for this or do I just have to wait for an update of Norton?
I have a WD EX2 Ultra and found on the WD community site where they said to try connecting the NAS via AFP. TimeMachine now works for me. However, Norton still locks out GoodSync when I try to sync to the same NAS. That one is my next mystery to solve.
None of the proposed solutions work. It appears Norton 365 cannot work on Mac OS Big Sur. This is ridiculous to expect customers to completely disable Norton 360 service in order to use their computer. Norton should pay customer $20/day until they fix the issue. That kind of incentive should result in a permanent fix within 24 hours. Norton, please implement that incentive so your company prioritizes a fix.
Has someone (Norton Team or other) already tried to list common factors outside of the Macs themselves, between users experiencing this problem ? I'm not sure if this would help, but it doesn't hurt to try.
It seems that at least QNAP (see pacoinmass ) and Synology (myself) NAS are affected.
For the network, I access the NAS over Wifi through an Asus router.
Any update on this? I have a new MacBook Air (2020 w/ Intel chip) and Norton 360 8.6.2. Anytime I try to run TimeMachine or GoodSync to backup files to my NAS it kills the entire network connection and I have to reboot.
Well, I downloaded Norton 360 yesterday. Not sure if it's 8.6.2 because when I click on About Norton 360 on the menu bar it says 8.6.1.
I have an intel-based mac, macOS Big Sur 11.2.1
Thus far I've had no issues. The internet works fine. No pop-ups about allowing connections and applications, and I mean zero. I'm able to connect to my mac as an smb server through my ipad without any problems. I'm able to use parallels access to log in to my mac remotely.
Regarding Parallels Desktop and Windows 10 virtual machine:
I'm able to run Windows 10 through Parallels Desktop without any problems. Also able to connect to Windows 10 virtual machine as an smb through connect to server through mac Finder. Lastly, I had been having problems copying and pasting between macOS and Windows 10, as well as issues mapping mac drives to Windows 10 – what solved the issue was with the windows 10 vm running, click on the Parallels Desktop Icon on the mac menu bar --> actions --> Reinstall Parallels Tools. Windows 10 then notifies to download Parallels Tools through the dvd drive (I know strange), it installs; Windows 10 restarts, and voila! Problem solved!
I tried Parallels "shared networking" again this morning and still no improvement, back to "bridged mode networking" to avoid going through Norton 360 on the Mac side.
In my case, this points to an incompatibility between Norton 360 Mac, Mac Big Sur and Parallels for Mac.
As I have a current subscription with Norton (as a very long term user of Norton) I would have expected this to be well and truly fixed by now - support rating for Norton right now is negative,
Parallels Desktop 16 Pro Edition for Mac (PDP) - Windows 10 VM
Using PDP “Shared network” it appears Norton on Mac increases loading on Mac (including excessive fan operation) vs PDP “Bridged network” there was no apparent increase in base Mac load and fans remained silent for the majority of the time.
PDP shared network mode uses a Parallels “subnet” whereas PDP bridged network mode does NOT utilise the PDP “subnet” , connecting directly to LAN or WIFI trusted network. Because of that I have Norton installed on the PDP Windows VM.
PDP shared network mode - I have experimented with adding PDP applications and subnet to Norton Firewall but no reduction in loading and fan operation.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We are actively looking into this issue, and is our top priority. We sincerely appreciate your patience. We will further update this thread as developments unfold. Thank you.
BitDefender so far works fine with Big Sur which was the main reason for the switch. It seems to be a quicker solution than Norton. It has all the features you’d expect. It includes a VPN the first 300Mb free and then you pay.
Hey Chris, how is the BitDefender working out for you.. Hopefully well... Getting frustrated with Norton.. Does BitDefender slow down your internet more than Norton, or not slow it at all?
I gave up as well. Tried endless combination with the result, that it is still not working. I have a fresh subscription, but uninstalled Norton now and currently run without antivirus software - just the macos firewall. Maybe try another antivirus later. Unfortunatelly very poor support from Norton with no feedback at all!
I too have now left Norton and went with Bitdefender. Seems to work fine on Mac and Windows with no annoying popups for WhatsApp and Messenger etc (even though they were set to allow in App Blocking settings on Norton). I'd rather pay for something that works and never need support, then pay Norton of their half baked solutions and non-existent support.
In summary, the solution appears to be to REMOVE NORTON and BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!
Gave up, uninstalled Norton and purchased BitDefender. Will not be returning. Very poor service.
Tried to use support they logged on enabled Norton and blocked the internet that stopped the connection to support. After that happened twice totally gave up. Support was really poor too.
