MacBookPro running VERY slow after install of NIS 4.0

Hi,

New to NIS 4.0 for MAC but running NIS 2010 on 6pcs. After installing on my MBP running most updated version of OSX 10.6.x, I am unable to anything. MBP takes forever to boot, and I am seeing the spinning color wheel constantly. I was fine prior to installing NIS 4.0.  I had issues with LiveUpdate, but was able to get that going after reading the community threads.

Entourage, Word, and other MS programs are not opening either, since install of NIS. I keep getting error messages saying that the programs can't open.

I can't even open terminal to perform a TOP command and see what is going on.

I can't provide version numbers at this time because the system is so unresponsive. But I am running the latest Snow Leopard GA release and the latest NIS 4.0 (with AV, Confidential, and FW) with latest updates as of 1/18/10 @ 11:00pm Eastern.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Shawn

Update: running Mac OS X 10.6.2.

NAV 11.1.1.(2)

Norton Confidential 1.3 (44)

Norton Firewall 4.1.0 (33)

I did turn off application blocking, and still can't access entourage, word, excel, or any other part of the MS Office 2008 suite for Mac.

I get the following error message: Microsoft Entourage quite unexpectedly. I was never getting this prior to installing NIS last night. Here are the details of the error:

Shawn

I haven't gotten any responses to my issue. So, I am updating again. It seems like I am okay on the performance front now. My biggest issue now is none of my Microsoft Office apps work at all. I get the same error message as described in the previous post. I can't even get the MS Uninstaller to work properly.

I am uninstalling Norton IS 4.0 until I can get some help with this.

hi threre-

can you email me at mike_romo@symantec.com? There's no reason why our products would prohibit launching your applications, so I'd like to work wtih you to figure out what's up with your system.

thanks,

mike

According to the crash log you posted:

Dyld Error Message:
  Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib
  Referenced from: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Entourage
  Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib: stat() failed with errno=5
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/Netlib.framework/Versions/12/Netlib: stat() failed with errno=5

Entourage can't launch because a DLL (framework) that it requires cannot be loaded. The errno=5 means "EIO" which basically could mean anything—the DLL is corrupted, or it can't be found. I don't really see how our software could have done that since we don't write files on disk. More than likely it's just some cosmic coincidence. If you uninstalled NIS and the problem still occurs, than more than likely Microsoft Office became corrupted somehow (it's happened to me before, when the Microsoft Updater crashed mid-way through updating).

Try deleting your Microsoft 2008 folder and re-installing Office. If that doesn't help you might want to have your hard drive checked using Disk Utility, since EIO possibly means the drive is corrupted.

Well, after uninstalling NIS 4.0, I rebooted, and now I get a grey screen on boot.  When booting with the CMD +SHIFT+D option, i see "still waiting for root device, which tells me my HD is gone!

Cosmic coincidence, I don't know. The only thing I have added to my set up in the last 6 months is NIS.  Very weird. I will try to restore from a month old backup and see what I get.
