I want to get a product that will scan for and pick up any possible firewall breaches. I've seen on a few posts here that anti spyware such as Spybot can be used with Norton. However, it seems as though there are quite a few problems with these kinds of products. They can interfere with the speed etc of the computer. I'm not clear on what other problems they've caused but some of the comments on other sites about these products (eg. IObit Security 360) have indicated regret that this anti malware was ever downloaded and installed.
Does anyone use a free download anti spyware that's really effective with Norton and can pass on the website address for safe downloading? I don't mind paying for a good product either but I'd like to check first that it's effective and operates okay with Norton anti virus (and AVG). I heard another free anti virus program was really effective (avast) but Norton blocked it. Thanks for any info.
Thanks for that. I looked at the link and Malwarebytes_free (MBAM) product seems to be a good option. However, although the site shows up as safe under a Norton check and had lots of positive feedback, when I tried to download it the product, I was automatically taken to an another malware site (cnet download). This site was also cleared by Norton but has some mixed responses as not as safe as it once was and someone apparently got trojans. It was not really clear what exactly they were downloading though.
My question is has anyone downloaded this anti malware product (free version) recently using the cnet site and (not) had any issues? Does a Norton safe site check really guarantee safe downloads?

I have recently installed the free version Of MalwareBytesAntiMalware from CNET with no problem. Just be sure to read the Terms & Conditions, and be sure to un-check any extra unwanted software that may be bundled with MBAM.

Thanks a lot Dave. I think I understood correctly: you tried to download the Malware product before but Norton anti virus stopped working so you removed everything. Now you've downloaded it and because you saved it first as a file, as advised, you could run it later (as administrator) without being connected to the internet?
I'm still a bit anxious and not very au fait with all of this so bear with me! I read this online (from fileforum.betanews) :
MBAM is 1 of the best programs to use after you are already infected. The bad news is, many infections go straight for MBAM and block it. Sometimes renaming the EXE file something else can make it work. Always install MBAM in a custom folder, which can sometimes prevent malware from finding and blocking it. 1 point off for using a Windows service, even though you choose not to run it as a real time scanner. It really should have a portable option so you can run it from a USB flash drive. Also, why does MBAM not allow VirusTotal to use it in their group of scanners? Despite these problems, MBAM is still 1 of the best.
Just wondering if anyone knows what's meant by a "custom folder"? And is it easy to uninstall this program through 'my computer' options if you decide it's not working well?
I've been reading the posts in this thread and wanted to put in my two cents. I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes free version a couple of nights ago. I wanted something to use in case I feel NIS missed something.
My download and install went perfect. I've read in this thread where there was some concern about downloading from cnet. When I went to Malwarebytes.org to download the free version, I was taken to MajorGeeks. I used that site years ago as a mirror site and never had a problem with other downloads.
I checked the site out thoroughly and downloaded to the desktop, then did an On Demand Scan of the file, then checked for both Digital and Counter Signatures before doing the install. Afterwards, after configuring the settings, I ran both a quick and full scan. I was really impressed. The quick scan found something I had forgotten about. Two registry entries where Norton Anti-Virus, (which I used to use before NIS), and NIS disable the Security Center in Control Panel in Windows XP, so a person doesn't receive duplicate alerts. Those I simply put in Malwarebytes Ignore List.
Ran a full scan after and nothing was found. For me, I like the program and made sure to follow the advice of another post and decline the 14 day trial offer, thus keeping it from conflicting with NIS.

Another free scanner I, and others here, use is SUPERAntiSpyware. Probably best to stick with the free version as the pro version has a real-time component that may interfere with Norton Products.
I just edited my post before seeing yours, making it clear about the free version, not the pro version, so there is no conflicts with NIS real-time protection.
Learned my lesson 10 or more years ago when first starting with a computer. Used to run more than one real-time security product. What a mess that was. A person has to learn those things. Since then, I've never run more than one at a time.

I downloaded the free product from Malwarebytes.org today. The site continued onto [Removed]
so I didn't have to deal with a new site while downloading. I also saved it to desktop and did scans with both Norton and AVG before running it (declined the free offer). Everything looks fine. I did a quick scan with Malware and nothing has been detected. I'll do a full system one later.
Why do you have Norton and AVG? Can you tell us which AVG product you have installed? I do hope it isn't the free anti virus product as running two real-time security products is a recipe for disaster.
Hmm. Now you've got me worried. Yes, I do have the AVG anti virus 2011 free version. I thought it was usual to have more than one system for protection. I did check with the computer technicians at my workplace, too.
I only had Norton for ages, and then it expired and I'd already installed AVG so just left it. Eventually I got around to updating Norton as well. I thought Norton would've blocked AVG if it had been a problem (it sure didn't accept Avast).
There is no benefit running two real-time AV programs, and in fact this could actually leave you less protected. Also the two will stumble over each other trying to do the same thing at the same time, resulting in reduced system performance.
Please remove AVG by the Control Panel method and reboot, then you will be best to run the AVG Utilities http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
(The first two on the list). Reboot again.
Be careful to download either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the uninstaller that matches your system.
