My wifes computer was in a word 'hijacked'. The old virus protection was not up to date and problems followed.
The old Norton was uninstalled and 360v2 is now installed and running, though I am unable to get any Windows updates.
The windows update will not work as it is not set as "automatic", though I am unable to change this.
I get an error message of "0x8DDD0018" on the Microsoft windows update page and after seaching various windows forums, i have learnt that this could be a malware known as Vundo\Virutmonde.
I have done a full scan using 360 and it is not picking this malware up and tells me the system is fine. It is very obvious that it is present due to two things that happen...
a) a new window opens when using IE7 with advertising
b) microsoft windows update will not work.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to fixing this computer?
Once those steps are completed, unplug from the internet, restart your computer in SAFE MODE and run a complete Malwarebytes scan. If items are found, follow the Malwarebytes suggested procedure.
This next step is optional but recommended. Delete your System Restore Points by turning off System Restore. Many infections will become embedded in your previous restore points - therein lies the possibility that they may return. Also you may find that the malware has already erased your restore points.
Restart your computer in Normal Mode and check how things are working.
Once you are completely sure your computer is clean, you can turn ON System Restore.
"IF" it is Vundo\Virutmonde, most of the infections of this type shows up in the Hijackthis log. Some of this malware now stop security software from updating and also the Windows update feature.
Hi Yogesh, Yes, I tried the Microsoft support instructions, though it still did not allow me to do a windows update. The Malware program Phil suggested did the trick. Regards S
