I installed NIS2009 on a system that appeared to have an infection. Online activation at end of install would not complete. It appears browsers were infected too. Ran NIS2009 scanner directly from CD boot, allowing for latest definitions to be downloaded. It detected and removed numerous trojan horses, downloader, and hacktool.rootkit infections. Rebooted system and NIS2009 would still not activate.
On next reboot I immediately noticed unexpected network activity, which appeared to be reinfecting the system because I did another scan and found more infections.
A number of reboots later system lost all desktop icons and the taskbar. I was able to activate the Task Manager and run programs except for 'Explorer'. So desktop icons and taskbar could not be found. Ran a command prompt window to get a backup to my flash drive, just in case.
Aside from a full system restore of the system as a means to fix the problem, is there anything known about this situation which has a fix to it.
Thanks in advance, Mitch.
