Managing Network Discovery

I tried searching the forums for a solution but I couldn't find it anywhere.  It's a pretty basic question.

How can I turn on and off network discovery in Norton Internet Discovery 2009?

I connect often to public networks on my university campus and all computers on that network are visible.  Windows Firewall is off when NIS is on so I can't use the settings in the Network and Sharing Center of Vista.

Any help?  Thank you very much.

Thanks for the help, both seem to be fine.  Right now I'm at home on my private network so I'll have to go up to campus to try it on a public one.

Another thing along these lines...does NIS overide sharing options provided by other programs?  Example:  I have an IBM Thinkpad and it came with a small program called Access Connections that allows you to manage different profiles and whatnot for networks.  There are options in there such as "Disable file and printer sharing" and "Disable internet connection sharing".  Who has the last say when it comes to sharing privledges: Norton or 3rd party programs?

Hi DangerBoy,

You can manage "network discovery" via the network map. When you are connected to the campus network, launch the network map and you can then view the network's trust level.  If you want to be undiscoverable, the "protected" setting is fine.  However, when set to "protected", others will not be able to access your shares (if you have any).  If that's desired, then this is ok.

As for the previous poster suggesting "Remote Monitoring", that is a separate feature for discovering other computers with Norton products installed on it.  If you don't need to remotely monitor another Norton computer, then you should have it turned off.

Thanks,

Great, that works.  Thank you very much for the help.
