My kids started complaining about internet slowdowns recently.
Every minute or so, if they try to access a URL, there is a big slowdown, then eventually things come up and they can browse for a couple of minutes. Then, they start to get the issue again.
We use Firefox, but the issue seems to impact anything that connects to the Net, including Chrome, IE, and even Carbonite, which occasionally reports that it cannot reach the backup server.
I have tried a lot of things (mainly because it took me a while to realize it was Safety Minder) including:
- Unistall recently installed apps
- Reset router, install new network cables
- System restore to a restore point from before probelms started to occur
- Disabling various startup items (other than norton)
- Disabling anti-virus and firewall.
None of these worked. FInally, I realized the problem goes away when I disable Saftey Minder.
I see on the forum sticky that the app was recently updated. Is there a way to roll back to a prior version?

No new apps or drivers last several weeks. Only security updates from MSFT, Adobe, etc. As mentioned, I already tried a system restore to a point from earlier in the month – right before last batch of security updates from MSFT. That did not help, though. I will see if I can find out when the problems began (need to talk to the kids) and report back. ps: this is on not one, but two home PC’s. Same problem on both.
Talking to my kids, problems have been going on longer than I thought.
They have definately noticed slowdowns as far back as the second week of September. They remember this specifically because I was out of town. They spent the week rebooting our router on a regular basis, to no avail.
Not sure if this goes all the way back to 8/30, but it now sounds possible.
Is there a way to "downgrade" to the prior version?
My son has also complained that 'the internet has slowed down' since the weeked - 23rd September. I was having no problems on my account so didn't understand. After re-booting the router with no effect to his account I disabled Online Family and his account now works fine. It isn't completely dead for him when enabled - just very slow, then some pages pop up quickly, then slow again.
So I kinda use Norton safety minder for myself; crazy as it may sound but lets move on LOL (besides I actually mainly got this for other family members who may use my computer, no need to re install it the day the come, just keep it installed 24-7)
ANYWAYS. Yes for some odd reason I too just received an update to Norton Safety Minder
Safety Minder Version: 23026
Online Framework: 2307
Datastore Version: 2307
Signature Version: 2306
Social Networking Version: 2306
I too am experiencing slow behaviours but just tonight on a whim I decided to try something. That little icon down near task manager (CLOCK), I right click and chose disable and VOILA speed is 100% better (browsing).
Now heres the kicker; if I keep the Safety Minder enabled I still DO NOT have the Add On enabled via Internet explorer.....so again as my other post mentioned (but has yet to get a full reply).....this application tends to block certain programs.
Case in point: After using Internet Explorer and erasing History and closing browser, I re-opened IE and disabled NOF; from there I went to search reviews dot com and the page loaded up in 5seconds.
After erasing History again within IE (via tools) closing browser, enabling NOF, I went back to search reviews dot com and within 15seconds I got a "server busy" page; so I opened a new window and it started to load......15-20seconds later before the page finally loaded up.
So in conclusion.....at this very moment in time I DO NOT have the add on "Safety Minder Enabled", also I havent had last several days since update........browsing internet is slow because I have NOF enabled down near clock (taskbar); however disabling NOF speeds up my browsing performance GREATLY!
In the last 48 hous and even now when I wrote, the pc with NOF 2.3.06, the web navigation is very very slow! 5 minutes to load Google home page, 7 minutes to load this site!
Deactivated NOF, the browser’s speed return to normal.

I see people referring to days of having this issue. We have been having issues off and on for months and months. I thought it was my router once and paid alot for a nice big router. Not. Spent hours on the phone with Century Link trying to figure out what was wrong. Nothing. About ready to reformat my computer (major pain and hours of reconfiguring) and in an off chance I disabled the safety minder software. Bingo - I was right back to full speed.
We have homework that must be done and life that nowadays requires access to the internet. If I can't function with this software, I have to change. I can't wait around for weeks to have someone come up with a patch. I have installed Netnanny for the moment and disabled Norton. How soon til there is a fix? I much prefer the administration through the net since I have three computers I manage for the kids.
A note of caution to any who may try to contact support and have them connect to your computer to look at what the problem might be. Don't waste your time. Once they connect, it disables or somehow sets aside the function of safety minder, so your internet will begin behaving properly while they are connected. They the tech will write it off as a false alarm. Once they disconnect - bam! It's right back to non-functioning internet access.
Yes, I am upset about this. Not because I don't have access, but because I have wasted SO MUCH TIME trying to figure out what the problem is - just to find out it is a software problem on Norton's side of the equation. How about a notice to all of your users? You didn't know it was a problem? Really? Ya, I'm a bit displeased at the moment.
I am not sure exactly what is going on but we have 3 computers with Safty Minder and in the past 24 hours they are geating almost no download speed at all. speed tests are in the range of 0.14Mbps mixed with a few spikes to max. I just spent 2 hours with Comcast techs on site testing the line and theit internal connections. We started a computer in Safe Mode and the problems are gone. Comcast packed up and said it 's your computers.
I ran full virse scan service on desktop and laptop mostly removing cookies, but did find one trojan virus that was quarintined. both systems seam to be working better - but I am not sure.
Same ssue here since Minder was updated. When I turnit off browsing is as expected: very fast. When it is own I eventaully get timeout erros1 out 5 times. The other 4 is very slow.
Same problem here. We have two family computers with multiple user accounts Running NSM 2.3.0.26 on Windows & 64 bit on both. Slowdown only on the kids accounts (not mine or my wifes). Slowdown in both Chrome (latest version) and Firefox (older version). We I turn off NSM on the kids accounts (by sliding to on/off in thier profile to off), the slowdown goes away. It comes back when I turn NSM back on.
Kids really complaining. Web browsing is horribly slow. Disable and it works fine. I am a yearly PAID member of Norton Family. It has been slow for my kids in the last 2-3 weeks. Has a PAID subscriber I need better service.
